Job Description:
The Substance Abuse counselor is primarily responsible for assisting in the development and provision of Alcohol and other Drug (AOD) assessment and counseling services for students at the University of Nevada, Reno. The substance abuse counselor will also participate in health professional consultation services and substance abuse education and outreach. The substance abuse counselor will maintain an office in the Office of Student Conduct and report directly to the Assistant Dean for the Office of Student Conduct. This position is funded through the University's Counseling Services. In addition, the Substance Abuse Counselor may collaborate with other University departments for substance related programming or staff and community training opportunities. The position utilizes the harm reduction model, determines and implements evidence-based intervention and treatment plans for referred clients, completes AOD assessments, and performs individual counseling for students.

The Office of Student Conduct offers a number of services related to assisting students who are dealing with issues related to the use, misuse or abuse of alcohol and other drugs. The Office of Student Conduct offers services to students who have violated the University alcohol and drug policy, have received an alcohol and other drug related citation, have been told to participate in an educational intervention by the court system or who have been referred to participate in such an intervention by another University agency. The Office of Student Conduct offers counseling services to students seeking to address issues in their life related to their use, misuse or abuse of alcohol and other drugs.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelors Degree from an accredited institution with two years of relevant work experience, or a Masters Degree with one year of relevant work experience. Relevant Experience: substance abuse counseling, psychiatry, psychology, social work, family therapy, nursing, medicine, or other State Board approved social science field. Nevada Licensed Drug and Alcohol Counselor (or eligible to obtain license)

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with a diverse student body population in a college or university environment.
