University Police Officer (Multiple Positions)


Nature of Work:
This is regular or special detail police work in protecting life and property and providing service for a state university community. Work involves professional and ethical response to the need for the prevention, detection, and investigation of crimes, for generally maintaining law and order, and developing collaborative relationships with the members of all the university communities. Work also involves patrolling assigned area, traffic enforcement, accident reporting, criminal investigations, and community policing initiatives. Assignments are received from superior officers and are carried out under established policies and procedures. However, employee must exercise quick, independent, and sound judgment and display initiative in applying work methods to emergency situations, which arise when superior officers are not immediately available. Work requires dedication to public service often made difficult by emotional or physical stress of events. Work is reviewed through conferences, written reports, inspections, and observation of results obtained. Rotating Shift work is the norm for this position.

Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited high school. Valid and unrestricted Georgia P.O.S.T. Peace Officer Certification ( Corrections Officer or out of state police officer certification is not acceptable) A valid Georgia drivers license.

Preferred Qualifications:


Essential Duties:
1. Patrols a designated area of the campus on foot, in a patrol car, or other conveyance as assigned, to preserve law and order, to prevent and discover the commission of crimes, and to enforce traffic and parking regulations; answer calls and complaints involving fire, traffic or other accidents, robberies, and other misdemeanors, felonies, and rule violations, and takes necessary police action; makes arrests and writes citations where appropriate.
2. Conducts investigations of criminal activities, consisting of collection and identification of evidence, questioning principals and witnesses, case preparation, and testifying in court. Investigates traffic accidents and performs related traffic control function
3. Participates in community policing initiatives and presentations as assigned and coordinates with university departments and organizations wherever possible.
4. Performs dispatcher duties such as operating telephone and shortwave radios, and performing related clerical tasks. This position requires fast, efficient, and accurate receiving, dispatching, and processing of calls and messages to and from police vehicles and personnel
5. Recovers stolen property; provides various types of public service and assistance to students, faculty, staff, guests, and visitors on the university campus; provides money escorts
6. Prepares necessary records and reports in an accurate, complete, and timely manner
7. Performs other related work, including cyber-crime investigations as required and assigned.
8. May be assigned duties at locations outside of the Savannah Campus, but within the jurisdictional boundaries of the university police department
