About the Position:

The Student Academic Services Unit provides activities and services which actively support California State University, Fullerton's missions by promoting the development of the whole student-academically, intellectually, and socially. We strive to create an environment where all students have the opportunity to succeed. The department coordinates the services of a number of student programs, many of which give particular attention to the education needs of low-income disadvantaged college students to ensure that they are able to successfully complete their college education. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as an EOP Counselor and Learning Community Coordinator (Student Services Professional III). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

Reporting to the Director for the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), the EOP Counselor and Learning Community Coordinator maintains a caseload of Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) students. Independently conducts in-depth holistic counseling sessions concerning academic learning, campus life, problem solving, and academic progress. Advises undergraduate EOP students about general education requirements, university procedures, and academic regulations. Independently conducts individual academic advisement/counseling sessions. Discusses personal issues/challenges as they relate to academic performance. Counsels students regarding Financial Aid appeals, researches history of appeals and completes Financial Aid appeal forms. Assists EOP students in the selection of courses, majors, and perspective career opportunities. Makes decisions in individual cases to resolve problems where guidelines and precedents do not exist. Must readily identify problems and alternative solutions without assistance from guidelines and formulas. Ensures that University/EOP academic probation policy and practices are followed and understood by students. Counsels students with academic challenges, such as: academic progress, course failure, academic probation, and dismissal status. Contacts instructors when necessary such as, to advocate for a student who is unable to attend class because of illness or other extraordinary circumstance. Recommends course of action or interventions, such as: academic monitoring, Supplemental Instruction, tutoring, and assesses time management skills and study skills. Provides personal counseling and evaluates counseling needs on an individual basis. Makes referrals to campus and off-campus resources as needed. Directs students to fully utilize campus resources such as: College Success Centers, Academic Advising Center, Records Office, Financial Aid, Disability Support Services, University Learning Center, Career Center, Health Center, Counseling and Psychological Services, Cultural Centers, Children's Center, Housing and Residential Engagement, Library, etc.

Works collaboratively with respective offices and keeps up to date on any changes related to services and informs the EOP counseling staff about any information that may impact EOP students. Accurately maintains and updates student files/records daily. Assists in the delivery of student success initiatives related to retention and graduation. Individually contacts and follows up with students using Titan Net campaigns or other campus approved communication methods. Attends counselors' meetings. Writes letters of recommendations for students seeking admissions to graduate school, employment, scholarships, etc. In collaboration with the EOP Director, plans, coordinates, and implements a one-to-two-year Learning Community for Summer Bridge students. This will include establishing and maintaining partnerships with academic departments, collaborating with the EOP Director to involve peer mentors in the Learning Community activities. Other duties as assigned such as serving on university committees, assists colleagues with special projects, participates in professional development and trainings.

Essential Qualifications:
Bachelors degree or the equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university in a related field including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution plus three years of professional student services work in the field. A masters degree from an accredited college or university in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctoral degree from an accredited college or university and the appropriate internship or clinical training in a relevant field may be substituted for three years of the required professional experience.

Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, supervise, and organize programs and activities. Ability to interact with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the public. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action. Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters. Ability to complete assignments without detailed instructions. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals. Possession of excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to acquire knowledge of campus procedures, activities, and the overall organization.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
