International Human Rights Clinic Part-time Lecturer of Law, 2025-26
The Boston University International Human Rights Clinic (IHRC), based at the School of Law, is hiring a part-time lecturer and clinical faculty supervisor for the academic year of 2025-2026. The part-time clinical faculty supervisor will be appointed with the title of Lecturer of Law from August 15, 2025-May 31, 2026.
The responsibilities of the position include:
- Project Supervision
- Throughout the appointment period, the part-time lecturer will be the primary supervisor for one international human rights project, in partnership with one or more international organization. The project may involve stateless persons and/or refugees in the Middle East region; submissions to the International Criminal Court on behalf of refugee populations; or advocacy in the Inter-American Commission or Court of Human Rights on behalf of families of disappeared persons. This will include clinical supervision of 3-4 law students assigned to the project, as well as any related travel. The part-time lecturer will also provide backup coverage for the director for the Clinic's other projects that include research and reports on the laws affecting stateless persons in the Middle East and North Africa and research and advocacy on behalf of several other advocacy organizations, focusing on the UN human rights mechanisms.
- Clinical Teaching
- The part-time lecturer will support teaching the fall and spring classes as needed, co-supervise simulations and supervise and evaluate classwork of the students for which s/he is responsible. The lecturer will lead the classes and supervision when the Clinic director is traveling for clinic projects during the fall 2025 and spring 2026 semesters. The two seminars cover a combination of skills development, professional responsibility, cross-cultural lawyering in the human rights context, the regional and international human rights mechanisms, and substantive law on forced migration.
- International Human Rights Skills (Fall 2025)
- The course is an introduction to human rights advocacy in the substantive area of forced migration (forced displacement, refugee law, statelessness). Through weekly classes and simulations, students learn and practice human rights lawyering skills: interviewing and counseling theories and techniques; fact investigation and documentation; developing a theory of the case/project; international human rights legal research and analysis; drafting effective communications for legal and non-legal audiences; persuasive advocacy in the human rights machinery; cross-cultural lawyering; and collaborative strategy development. Class assignments and simulations are scheduled throughout the semester, and the simulations provide intensive, hands-on experience for the students to develop the core skills taught in the clinic. The classes include project rounds' to share ideas and help students develop strategies in the actual projects.
- IHR Law Clinic International Human Rights Advocacy in the Inter-American Human Rights system (Spring 2026)
- The International Human Rights Advocacy seminar is a 3-credit course offered in the spring, open only to IHRC students. The course is an immersion in the Inter-American Human rights system: the specialized Inter-American instruments; the human rights mechanisms and jurisprudence of the Inter-American (I-A) Commission and Court. The course is taught through a series of simulations of legal interviewing, counseling, and written and oral advocacy at various levels of the I-A system, culminating in a final simulation involving a petition to the I-A Commission of Human Rights. The spring classes also include project rounds.'
Start/end dates: 08/15/2025 (or as soon as possible) -05/31/2026
Required Skills
- Prior clinical teaching in human rights strongly preferred.
- Spanish or Arabic fluency preferred for this position.
