Job Summary
The Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy is one of the nation's top policy schools. The Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy is seeking a professional advisor/counselor to provide academic advising and counseling to our Master's students.

Responsibilities*
Provide academic advising, including assisting students with strategies that promote academic and professional success, as well as personal wellness.

Monitor academic performance for master's degree students and counsel students experiencing academic difficulties.

Refer students to support services including financial aid, tutorial support, psychological, and testing services.

Interpret and explain academic requirements to graduate students and provide information about course selection, course waivers, dual degree opportunities, co-curricular opportunities, and other academic concerns.

Serve as a contact for students with unanticipated emergencies that impact academic program, communicating with students, faculty, and other University units as appropriate to provide student with support and appropriate resources.

Provide counseling and crisis intervention to students experiencing stressful situations where appropriate.

Counsel Director of Student Services and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs on student concerns and community initiatives.

Plan and implement annual welcome week (orientation) activities. Create communication plan, including newsletters, to help advise matriculated students prior to their arrival on campus.

Plan student-related commencement activities and coordinate with other Ford School teams.

Interface with Deans, department leaders, faculty, and staff to ensure students receive support required to keep them on-track towards graduation. Serve as a resource for faculty questions regarding academic advising issues.

Advise, mentor and assist other SAS staff and peer advisors with academic advising for the BA and PhD programs as well.

Serve as an advisor and liaison with student organizations.

Collaborate with Associate Dean for Academic Affairs to support Graduate Student Instructors, including holding GSI Orientation.

Work with Rackham and other schools/departments on campus regarding dual degree program requirements for master's students and student enrollment information.

Represent the Ford School, and the interests of its student body, on a variety of committees.

Required Qualifications*
A Master's degree, preferably in student personnel, counseling, higher education, public policy, or a related field.

At least one to two years of professional experience in academic advising and counseling students, including experience advising graduate students.

Excellent interpersonal skills required in order to develop strong working relationships with a diverse population of students, staff and faculty.

Advanced experience with managing data in complex databases, including ability to perform computer data entry with a high degree of speed and accuracy as well as proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite products.

Demonstrated attention to detail, ability to manage multiple tasks, ability to work independently, exercise initiative as a critical member of a small team, and function in a dynamic environment.

Desired Qualifications*
Knowledge of U of M policies and procedures.

Working familiarity with Wolverine Access, M-Pathways Student Administration System and the Student Financial System is strongly desired.
