Position Summary
The University of the Incarnate Word invites applications for the position of Assistant Director under the Counseling Center/Behavioral Health Services.
The Assistant Director position is responsible for providing leadership to the Counseling & Behavioral Health Staff and interns in absence of the Director and will lead suicide education and prevention efforts for the UIW system.
The Assistant Director will serve as a consultant/ expert on mental health and human development matters by serving on committees, leading training and professional presentations, and working with grants that support student mental health and crisis prevention. The Assistant Director will also assist with special behavioral health initiatives in the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine.
This leader will also be involved with individual, group, and couples/family counseling, crisis assessment / intervention, learning assessment and ADA related assessments for students enrolled at UIW or any of its affiliate Catholic School programs. This position will also provide information and referral services to employees of the UIW system as needed.

Provides assessment, individual, family, couples, and group counseling
Provides crisis intervention and emergency walk-in services
Conducts assessment and provides diagnosis and treatment planning
Provides clinical consultation to university community and serves on university committees
Follows all professional ethical guidelines, including the maintenance of confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA/ FERPA/insurance and other university federal and state requirements
Maintains flexibility as issues with coverage arise and as additional collaborative meetings are requested
Must be able to work independently and collaboratively with team members
Must be able to manage conflict and to communicate well during problem-solving
Provides consultation, mediation, psychoeducation, and outreach services and programs to the campus, faculty, staff, and students. (e.g. Orientations)
Works alongside interns in the provision of counseling services, psychoeducation, and consultation
Represents the Counseling Center at campus community events, School of Osteopathic Medicine events, and at conferences
Attends administrative, staff development, required training, and supervision meetings
Contributes time to development of special behavioral health initiatives and grant funded projects, and research connected to the Counseling Center and Osteopathic School of Medicine
Works with grant and departmental data collection and reporting
Completes necessary and required documentation within 48 hours, consistent with professional and office expectations
Maintains requirements needed for credentialing
Other duties as assigned
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Highly knowledgeable in a variety of evidenced based and brief counseling modalities with effective use of assessment and treatment planning.
Must be proficient in providing counseling to culturally diverse populations with a variety of life challenges/ diagnoses. Must be eligible for insurance credentialing.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access, and familiar with EHR. Must possess excellent interpersonal, written, oral / presentation skills.
Knowledge and experience leading teams, setting program goals, managing outcomes data, and public speaking.
Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA
Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures
Required Education
Masters Degree in Counseling or related field and unrestricted and current licensure as a mental health professional in the state of Texas.
Required Work Experience
Five years of clinical counseling experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Ph.D. in Counseling or related field
Two years of counseling center management / leadership experience preferred
Past work experience in higher education settings as program administrator and/or faculty member
Experience as a grant administrator
Bi-Lingual in Spanish
Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations
Current and unrestricted Texas Licensed Professional Counselor LPC / Texas. Temporary licensure (LPC Intern) will not be considered.
Must hold valid drivers license and be able to drive to different UIW campuses as needed.
Work Hours
Between 8am-5pm. Must be flexible to meet needs of UIW students. May require occasional weekend or evening work for special events
Physical Demands
Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.
Lift 10 to 20 lbs.
