Southern Illinois University Carbondale invites applications and nominations for the position of Assistant Director of Outdoor Education and Recreation for Touch of Nature Environmental Center with faculty appointment in the Department of Public Health and the Recreation Professions.

The Position: This is a 75% FTE, 12-month, term (renewable) Administrative/Professional position with an independent, 25% FTE, 9 month (August 16 – May 15) term (renewable) non-tenure-track faculty appointment. The Assistant Director position is critical in assisting the Touch of Nature Director with the administration of Touch of Nature's Outdoor Education program, that includes Adventure Education, Environmental Education, Therapeutic Recreation, and Veteran Adventures to achieve functional objectives affecting revenue streams and participant satisfaction. Campus policy enforcement, class and program risk management, and overall Outdoor Education and Recreation management decisions are decided by this position. Other duties include direct supervision of three (3) full-time staff at Touch of Nature, working with the academic department to oversee all Touch of Nature programming interns and fieldwork students as assigned by the department, and indirect supervision of programming student staff and part time staff. Responsible for working with other staff to create an enjoyable outdoor education and recreation experience for campers, community members, SIU students and SIU employees. Other duties as assigned.

The 25% FTE NTT faculty appointment in the Department of Public Health and Recreation Professions typically will entail teaching of one (1) three-credit course per academic semester as assigned by the Department Chair. Opportunities for summer teaching may be available depending on curricular need.

Qualifications and Requirements: A Master's Degree in Outdoor Education, Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation or related field. A doctoral degree is highly desired/preferred. For a selected individual holding a doctoral degree, the faculty appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor of Practice. Three (3) years or more of work experience managing outdoor education/recreation programs. One (1) or more years teaching experience at a higher education level. Knowledge of the principles and techniques related to outdoor education, therapeutic recreation, and stress-challenge programming in the wilderness. This is a security-sensitive position.
