Associate Director of Penn State Extension

The College of Agricultural Sciences is seeking a highly motivated and positive individual to join our nationally recognized Penn State Extension team as Associate Director of Penn State Extension. The primary responsibility of the Associate Director of Extension is to ensure that Penn State Extension develops and delivers high quality, relevant and impactful extension educational programs, products and services through a variety of formats consistent with the organization's vision. This is accomplished through direct supervision of the Assistant Directors of Programs (ADPs). As supervisor, the Associate Director will provide leadership and support in the planning, prioritizing, budgeting, development, delivery and evaluation of programs, products and services. The resulting program and product mix will address Extension customers' changing educational priorities and needs - enabling the organization to increase agility, lower costs, improve performance and focus internal resources on our core competencies and strategic goals. The successful candidate will provide senior-level leadership and stand in for the director as needed, as well as provide daily oversight in the development and implementation of a customer-centric, innovative program strategy that meets the mission of a land-grant University. The individual must be familiar with methods of delivering educational programs and products in-person and online. The individual will lead organizational goals of interfacing research with educational programming. As the person responsible for the educational program vision and product portfolio for the organization, the individual will lead the implementation of the Program Development Process (PDP), a structured market assessment and program prioritization process. Responsibilities within this process include the evaluation and approval of program team priorities and investments as well as leading program/product evaluation and impact reporting. To this end, the individual will supervise the Evaluation Director for Penn State Extension. Approximately 50% of the individual`s time will be spent supervising and providing leadership to Assistant Directors of Programs in program (product) prioritization and their subsequent development, production and delivery to build a high-quality program and product portfolio that meets stakeholder's expectations in ways consistent with organizational goals and objectives. Approximately 30% of their time will be spent developing programming strategies and processes. This will consist of the improvement, development and implementation of organizational structures, processes, and best practices to accomplish programming goals. The remaining 20% of time will be focused on internal and external communications. The individual will work with the Extension Director and Dean as well as the Office of College Relations and Communications to develop and implement an effective communications strategy and plan to help explain and champion organizational direction, mission, and vision with a focus on program development strategies and implementation plans. Skills and Competencies: The successful candidate must demonstrate the capacity to manage the overall program and product portfolio for Penn State Extension and is expected to understand program development and product life cycle management (market assessment, development, delivery and evaluation). This will require making and justifying decisions between multiple competing programs and program teams. Therefore, the candidate will need to demonstrate excellence in leadership, strategic planning, communications, establishing and maintaining relationships, and financial management. The individual will need to have a thorough understanding of academic research and teaching functions, including the promotion and tenure process. The ability to assess quality of research and teaching are critical. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to work well with faculty, educators and staff in translating and packaging research-based knowledge and technology into high quality educational products for diverse audiences. The ability to engage and work cooperatively among a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, industry, government and agency groups is essential in our college and University. Relationships: The Associate Director of Extension reports directly to the Associate Dean and Director of Extension, who in turn reports to the Dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences. Extension Educators are assigned to one of seven State Extension Units that are supervised by the ADPs. It is also expected that this person will work closely with academic unit leaders. Qualifications: Ph.D. in a field related to Agriculture, Food, Families and Health, Economic and Community Development or 4-H-Youth Development and a strong knowledge of Extension education and operations. The candidate must also have an academic record that would merit tenure being granted at Penn State. Leadership and administrative experience are required. Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. An excellent benefits package is provided. Applications: Submit a letter of application, names and addresses of three professional references, curriculum vitae, and official transcripts. Review of applications will begin November 15, 2019 and continue until a suitable candidate is identified. The start date will be as negotiated.
