WNE is seeking an HR leader to join a dynamic and agile team of future-focused leaders creating a"new traditional" institution at the forefront of progressive thinking and positive change.

The Associate Vice President of Human Resources will serve as the lead Human Resources executive for the University overseeing all aspects of Human Resources for approximately 650 staff and faculty. Reporting to the Vice President of Finance and Administration and leading an HR team of seven (7), The Associate VP of HR will focus on HR strategies, policies, systems, and services that ensure HR operations effectively responds and adapts to internal and external challenges and opportunities. As a strategic business partner, the Associate VP of HR is an advisor to stakeholders across the organization and contributes to institution-wide results through effective performance management and accountability measures. The Associate VP of HR is an advocate for all employees, encourages and practices meaningful engagement and is instrumental in building a culture of trust, respect, and positive morale.

Essential Functions

  • Provide overall leadership and direction to HR functions including recruitment, orientation, on-boarding, retention. compensation, benefits, administration, health and wellness, training and development, policy development, HRIS and compliance.

  • Develop an employer brand to attract, and retain key talent and influence the broader community to be brand ambassadors.

  • Provide leadership in developing University wide strategies to attract, develop, and retain a diverse, inclusive, and competent workforce, ensuring all recruitment initiatives reach and identify diverse pools of qualified applicants who all receive equal consideration; Direct and support search committees providing training and guidance to assure recruitment and hiring processes are free of bias and discrimination.

  • Develop long range HR strategic plans to anticipate change, increase employee engagement, improve organizational efficiency, reduce risk, and contain costs.

  • Participate as a member of the President's Council; provide strategic human resources advice and consultation to members of the President's Council and the Board of Trustees.

  • Work in collaboration with key campus decision makers, serving as an advisor and expert on organizational issues, management practices, and employee relations matters.

  • Ensure that organizational values and expected conduct (Commitment to Civility) are clearly communicated and embraced at all levels of the organization to ensure a respectful, collaborative, and positive environment.

  • Intervene and mediate conflicts in a manner that leads to appropriate resolution; support development of conflict management and resolution skills throughout the institution.

  • Develop and implement comprehensive compensation and benefit strategies that are competitive and equitable.

  • Lead and develop organizational development strategies. Provides advice and guidance to all levels of management on organizational development and professional development initiatives.

  • Lead the University in the analysis and evaluation of employee performance to identify gaps, develop performance plans and ensure effective utilization of employee talent across the organization.

  • Determine HR metrics for the department and analyze data regularly to ensure HR strategies are aligned with organizational goals and are producing effective results and desired impact.

  • Stay current with industry trends, best practices, and legal updates to ensure optimal performance of the HR Department and compliance with University policy and governmental laws and regulations.

  • Supervise and evaluate the performance of the human resources management team; provide opportunities for professional development to all members of the HR Department.

  • Oversee and resolve discrimination complaints including but not limited Title IX made by faculty, staff, students, vendors and applicants.

  • Inspire and support a culture of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion through strategic action, programming and education.

  • Evaluate all workforce requests for reasonable accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and serve as the University's 504 Coordinator.

  • Develop and evaluate the University's exempt and non-exempt pay structures annually relative to external market and internal equity; identify Universities, Colleges, and organizations to use as benchmarks. Ensure WNE's pay practices and policies complies with all federal and state laws and regulations.

  • Work in collaboration with key campus decision makers, serving as an advisor and expert on organizational issues, management practices, and employee relations matters.


Qualifications and Desired Competencies:

The Associate VP of HR will be an enthusiastic and collaborative leader, with an advanced degree (or relevant, equivalent experience), and a minimum of 7 - 10 years of experience in a senior human resources position in a mid to large size public facing organization. The Associate VP of HR will have a record of accomplishment and proven performance effectively managing an HR department and delivering innovative human resource programs and services in dynamic environments. HR leadership experience in higher education is preferred but not required.

The Associate VP of HR will have strong business acumen and general management experience. The successful candidate will also have excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills, effective organizational and supervisory skills, and a proven ability to effectively collaborate with people from broadly diverse cultural and educational backgrounds.
