Position Summary

The Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students reports to the Vice President for Student Affairs and Campus Diversity and serves as one of the executive officers in the Division. The Associate Vice President is responsible for the direction and coordination of department programs/personnel as designated by the Vice President for Student Affairs. The incumbent represents the interests of the Division on a day-to-day basis at the sub-Cabinet level and is responsible for the promotion of student development through a program of co-curricular activities and services to students. The Associate Vice President is also responsible for the quality of the campus social, cultural and educational environment and the student services that enhance the University's academic programs and the intellectual and personal development of students on the San Diego State University campus.

The Residential Education Office is designated as the University department responsible for planning and administering Residential Education programs and services including those in traditional residence halls and apartment complexes. The Residential Education Office serves to enhance student life and success through a comprehensive living-learning experience that provides academic and personal support, contact with faculty, educational programs, community activities, student leadership development and multicultural learning opportunities. The department is part of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Campus Diversity/Dean of Students sub-division.

The Residential Education Office strives to provide safe and supportive on campus living learning communities where diverse students are challenged to develop holistically; as scholars, citizens and leaders.

Residential Education staff members are dedicated to providing curricular and co-curricular experiences to develop and enhance residents' academic success, awareness and appreciation of diversity, and civic responsibility.

To accomplish these objectives, Residential Education employs approximately 16 Residence Hall Coordinators, 10 Assistant Program Coordinators, 200 paraprofessional team members, a central office staff of 17, and a variety of student assistants.

Under general direction, the Coordinator of Residential Education for Student Leadership and Assessment performs complex Student Services professional work characterized by independent student advisement and guidance in individual and group settings. Such advisement involves basic counseling techniques and may concern career, academic, learning, campus life and/or related issues. Incumbents in this classification spend substantial portions of time in advisement sessions of considerable duration and utilize skills usually gained in graduate courses in counseling and guidance, human relations or related fields. This level is further characterized by assignments requiring the application of a high degree of judgment, or persuasiveness, imagination and professional skills and knowledge in a specified program or service area, as well as a general understanding of the interrelationships and the need for coordinated action within the total Student Services program. This level requires considerable administrative planning to develop creative solutions which integrate approaches across organizational lines. At this level, there is also the responsibility for recognizing specific program needs and for developing approaches for possible implementation to meet these needs.

The Coordinator of Residential Education for Student Leadership and Assessment under direction and supervision from the Associate Director, develops a comprehensive in hall residential student government program. This includes leadership development and self-governance opportunities for residents (e.g. Residence Hall Association (RHA), First-year and sophomore+ councils, and other residence hall student leadership groups. In addition, this role will assist the Associate Director with the student leader recruitment, selection, and training processes, and participate on additional screening committees for departmental positions.

The Coordinator of Residential Education for Student Leadership and Assessment collaborates with campus partners to evaluate Residential Education's achievement of student learning outcomes, especially in regard to curriculum planning. The coordinator will assess residence hall student needs and expectations, prepare program evaluation tools, and evaluate statistical data and evaluation results to project changes, improved future programming, and assess the success of programs in increasing involvement, retention and academic success rates.

The Coordinator of Residential Education for Student Leadership and Assessment will participate as appropriate in various Residential Education programs and will carry out other duties as assigned by the Associate Director and/or Executive/Director of Residential Education.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Education and Experience

Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required. A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.

Specialized Skills
  • Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Counseling, College Student Personnel, or a related field.
  • Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in a residential education environment.
  • Ability to multitask with day-to-day changes in priorities.
  • Ability to effectively handle and complete several ongoing projects and activities in a work environment characterized by frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to effectively use Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint to create and analyze reports, manage data, resource materials and presentations.
  • Ability to learn and use the Presence platform.
  • Ability to conduct presentations on programmatic co-curricular activities.
  • Working knowledge of or the ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of university policies, procedures, rules and regulations and their application to student organizations, student activities and expression, and student governance structures preferred.

Preferred Qualifications
  • A Masters Degree in Education, Psychology, or Social Sciences is preferred.
  • 3-5 years of experience working in higher education.
  • Preferred experience working with students in a residential setting.
  • Knowledge and experience utilizing a variety of assessment tools and techniques in order to collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data.
  • Experience advising residential student organizations (i.e. NRHH, RHA, hall council, etc.).
  • Experience working with a large diverse student population.
  • Basic knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work and student advising and community contacts.
  • Effective interpersonal skills required to build and maintain cooperative working relationships among diverse individuals and groups.
  • Knowledge of event planning, coordination and implementing program activities.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5,025 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,025 - $7,159 per month.
