Position Summary:
Seattle Central College, located in the vibrant Capitol Hill area at the heart of Seattle, seeks a full-time, tenure-track instructor to teach in the Visual Media (VME) program. This cohort-driven workforce program prepares students to work in the photography and film & video fields, and currently includes classes on lighting, story-telling, editing, audio, production (pre- and post-), and related areas. We seek someone who thrives as a team-member while being capable of leading and developing a young program.

The successful applicant will have a minimum two years of recent industry experience, and either i) a Bachelor's degree in photography, film & video, or related field, plus at least two years of sustained teaching experience, or ii) a minimum of an additional seven years of industry experience, at least two of which include leadership and/or management duties. Applicants who have expertise in two or more areas will receive preferred consideration.

Candidates should be willing to teach in a variety of formats such as in-class, hybrid, online and varied class times including days, evenings, and weekends according to program needs.

This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement with representation by AFT-Seattle and is subject to union shop provisions

Essential Functions:

Instruct a diverse student population using various pedagogical methods in visual media courses, and promoting successful student learning. The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise, such as industry experience and/or experience in academic instruction, in the photography and film & video fields, including at least two of the following areas: lighting, story-telling, editing, audio, production (pre- and post-), and related areas.
Supervise students in classroom and lab settings. This includes all aspects of visual media, with an emphasis on building a professional portfolio.
Know relevant software, for example Premiere, Lightroom, Photoshop, and After Effects.
Ability to Coordinate the Visual Media program, including but not limited to:
- Conducting ongoing curriculum development, and course and program assessment and review, as required by Seattle Central College.
- Ensuring that the VME courses and program remain relevant to Seattle's workforce needs and evolutions within the industry.
- Recruiting students, assessing applications for the program, and making admittance decisions.
- Advising and mentoring matriculated students for success.
- Acting as a peer resource for fellow faculty and staff, conducting faculty meetings, and coordinating efforts for holding information open houses and end-of-year students show/s.
- Advising deans on staffing needs, and cooperating with hiring part-time instructors to serve the program.
- Communicating in timely and sufficient ways with students, colleagues, and deans.
Serve on division, college, and district-wide committees, and be actively involved in institutional initiatives.
Develop and enhance knowledge of visual media trends through professional development and professional organization activities.
Meet all professional obligations and all other provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.
Work collaboratively across the district and lead (if directed) projects and initiatives in support of student success.

Required Education, Experience & Abilities:

Minimum of 2 years recent industry experience in photography or film and video and either:
- A Bachelor's degree in photography, film and video, or related field and at least two years of sustained teaching experience

A minimum of an additional seven years of industry experience in photography or film and video at least two of which include leadership and/or management duties

Familiarity and experience with a wide range of camera equipment and production
Proficiency with video and/or still-image editing
