Hourly Rate or Monthly Salary: Starting at $3,991.75 per month (salary range 13 in 2018-19), plus a possible 2.5% shift differential based on the hours worked.

Working Hours: Two regular, full-time positions, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year on the Oceanside and/or San Elijo campuses. May work day and/or evening hours with rotating weekends based on the needs of the department. The persons selected for these positions will be subject to assignment to any district facility during any hours of operation.

Basic Function and Other Details:
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under general supervision, provide work direction to instructional staff and student tutors engaged in providing individual and group tutoring assistance to all levels of students; assist students in learning concepts and operations taught in classes, completing class assignments, and preparing for assessments; work with faculty to provide instructional support for their students; assist Senior Learning Coach, Learning Center Coordinator, and Learning Center Director as needed; work with faculty/staff in supplemental instruction (SI) or embedded tutoring; and perform related duties as assigned. Collaborate with faculty and engage with resources to maintain and expand knowledge of MiraCosta College curricula, classroom pedagogy, research into how people learn, and discipline-based education research.

Representative Duties:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Open and close the Learning Center at the beginning/end of the work day; ensure resources and equipment are properly maintained and returned.

2. Provide routine-to-advanced academic tutoring services to individual students or to groups of students by appointment or on a walk-in basis; ask questions to evaluate students' learning issues and needs and to determine appropriate courses of action to enhance their learning skills and techniques; explain theories, concepts applications, and procedures used in the discipline to all levels of classes offered in a logical, accurate, and interesting manner; lead tutoring for one or more core groups associated with certain classes.

3. Provide clarification of course and assignment content; aid students in understanding concepts and developing and applying problem-solving techniques appropriate to course content; use a variety of learning resources and professional tutoring techniques to support students in the learning process; provide information on other available student resources; demonstrate or describe the operation and appropriate use of materials, software, and calculators.

4. Develop and implement review workshops and handouts on issues, problems, and topics requiring additional student support, consistent with faculty curriculum and instructional materials, for student use as reference materials; upload materials to the Learning Center website; develop and maintain webpages and social media presence.

5. Assist with recruitment, training and providing guidance and work direction to new student and non-student workers; develop ongoing in-service tutor training and mentoring for continuing employees; provide evaluation feedback to tutors to ensure professional and personal growth. Identify and assess potential areas of concern and propose solutions.

6. Monitor interactions involving students and Learning Center staff and provide guidance to others on methods for addressing difficult tutoring issues; assign work and monitor for completeness, accuracy and alignment with district, department and legal/regulatory requirements and standards; monitor work-flow to ensure mandated deadlines are being met in an optimal manner; provide information, instruction and training on work procedures and technical/legal/regulatory requirements; provide feedback to supervisor on employee work performance and behaviors; observe student tutors, and other instructional staff and provide feedback to the Director/Coordinator on student worker performance.

7. Gather and analyze Learning Center student-visit and resource-usage data; maintain student data records; provide recommendations to the Director/Coordinator on additional student services needed.

8. Assist in the development of curricular components; attend departmental and college wide meetings.

9. Assist instructors and students with student projects and related problems; help students to prepare and present work using appropriate notation and language; provide feedback to faculty on issues and concerns if student progress is not being observed; meet with faculty members periodically to learn about new course materials and instructional guidelines.

10. Ensure that support services are provided to all students at all district locations.

11. Act in the absence of the Senior Learning Coach, as assigned. Oversee the day-to-day operation of each of the Center locations; ensure staff are taking the legally required breaks and rest periods; validate that there are enough tutors scheduled on a given shift by establishing and monitoring schedules; independently adjust staffing as needed by performing minor rescheduling for the day and communicate these changes to the Director/Coordinator and Senior Learning Coaches. OTHER DUTIES:
1. Administer and proctor makeup tests; reproduce test materials; notify instructors when tests have been completed; build and maintain archival database of completed exams.

2. Participate in special events and projects; make visits to classrooms to promote Learning Center services.

3. Work with faculty to provide innovative solutions to issues involving student success and retention.

4. May provide tutoring in other related subjects or areas of expertise on a time-available basis.

5. Receive, catalog, and store supplies, materials, and equipment; direct and participate in inventory of equipment and materials, assuring that adequate quantities are available for instructional use; coordinate necessary orders and shipments with the Director/Coordinator.

6. Maintain work and learning environment in a safe, clean and orderly condition; make minor repairs or adjustments to learning equipment.

7. Assist students in borrowing textbooks, calculators and other materials; provide routine administrative support for the Learning Center including answering phones and replying to emails.

8. Research open education and online resources to provide information to students and to include on the Learning Center website.

9. Perform related duties as assigned.

Type of Benefits:
Due to a districtwide compensation study, the salary range will increase from range 13 to 15 ($4,228.50 per month) in 2019-2020 and from range 15 to 21 ($5,029.42 per month) in 2020-2021. A full benefit package which includes employer-paid medical, dental, and vision plans for employee and dependents; $100,000 employee life insurance; other optional coverages; and membership in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS).

Minimum Qualifications:
5. Communicate clearly and concisely in English, both orally and in writing; understand and follow written and oral directions; meet schedules and timelines; complete work in an environment with many interruptions.

6. Operate a variety of office equipment including computer, scanner, calculators, and appropriate software; maintain Learning Center web pages; produce handouts, instructional materials, and multi-media materials for students.

7. Plan, organize, and implement academic support programs and workshops including public speaking in classroom presentations and other events.

8. Analyze situations quickly and accurately, evaluate alternatives and recommend or adopt an effective course of action using sound judgment; understand, interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures and apply them in a variety of procedural situations.

9. Maintain confidentiality of information related to FERPA, student privacy, and disabilities; maintain records and files; organize and assemble data. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
To be eligible for these positions, you must meet and provide evidence of the following minimum qualifications:

1. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in a related field.

2. One year of tutoring experience in an educational setting; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

(NOTE: For tutoring experience, one "year" is defined as equivalent to 40 hours per week for 12 months, or at least 2,080 hours)

Desirable Qualifications:
1. Knowledge of best practices related to tutoring. 2. Ability to provide support and assistance to students in multiple STEM content areas which include: Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics, and Physical Science (Astronomy, Oceanography, and Geology).
