Position Summary:
Metropolitan State University of Denver seeks to hire a full-time staff member for the position of Photography Lab Manager at the bi-institutional facilities shared equally with the University of Colorado Denver. The successful candidate has experience with, and a solid understanding of, the needs of a facility equipped with a comprehensive wet lab darkroom and finely tuned digital media lab. A 6500 square foot facility, the photography lab supports several large traditional wet process labs, a 32 color processor, alternative process labs, a lighting studio, and a digital photography lab. The digital facility utilizes Mac Intel computers and Canon large format printers and scanners. All monitors, printers, and papers are custom profiled for a smoothly operating color management system. The Lab Manager supervises student work-study positions and volunteer lab assistants. The facility serves a diverse student body, providing a safe, comfortable, ad clean working environment.

Individuals must possess interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively with internal/external colleagues and students, have strengths that are technically and digitally driven, and support faculty with interdisciplinary teaching strategies. Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Maintaining current skills in digital and analog photographic technology.
  • Overseeing the Photography Lab budget.
  • Maximizing the usefulness and efficiency of the Photography Lab within the constraints of the facilities and the budget available.
  • Maintaining a C41 color processor.
  • Upgrading hardware and software for digital facilities as directed by steering committee.
  • Recommending upgrades to darkroom equipment to the steering committee.
  • Recruiting, hiring, training, supervising, and scheduling qualified student assistants.
  • Conducting safety training sessions and orientations.
  • Ordering supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Maintaining equipment and overseeing repairs.
  • Keeping abreast of relevant technological updates.
  • Building relationships with appropriate vendors.
  • Maintaining a good working relationship with campus facilities for maintenance and repair issues.


Required Qualifications:
BA, BS, or BFA plus professional experience in photography

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in an academic photography lab with analog and digital facilities
Managerial experience
Experience with a diverse student population
Familiarity with contemporary photographic art
