Position Summary

Salary range for this position is: $18.10 - $23.45 per hour (depending on experience)

This is a part time (50%) permanent support position serving the tutoring needs of students enrolled in the Basic and Transitional Studies Division (BTSD) at Seattle Central College. The BTSD Tutoring Center matches volunteers with students to offer 1:1 support and classroom assistants in person and online through remote learning. These support services are important for student persistence and fostering a community within BTSD.

The BTSD Tutoring Center Program Coordinator recruits, trains, coordinates, and supports volunteer tutors from the community, service learners from educational institutions in the Greater Seattle Area, and tutors for credit from Seattle Central College to work with BTSD students. The Coordinator communicates by modeling inclusion and respect for a wide range of diverse learners and is also involved in community outreach, often serving as an ambassador for the division.

The Basic and Transitional Studies Division offers a variety of programs to help learners of all levels, providing the education needed to prepare for college and career readiness. The BTSD annually serves about 2,000 students through Adult Basic Education (ABE), English as a Second Language (ESL), GED preparation, High School 21 (HS21) courses. Our goal is to help students acclimate to higher education and to gain the skills they need for college and career readiness. NOTE: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this position will be remote until Seattle Central College resumes in-person operations.

This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement with representation by WFSE.

What you will be working on:
  • Recruiting volunteer tutors by engaging in community outreach and partners with local organizations
  • Ensuring tutors to cultivate a supportive environment for diverse and multicultural students
  • Coordinating, training, supporting, and evaluating tutors
  • Matching volunteers with students
  • Collaborating with ESL, ABE, and GED faculty regarding the need for classroom assistants
  • Facilitating communication among tutors, students, and faculty, including mediating conflict
  • Providing ongoing direction and support for volunteers and students
  • Developing training materials and helpful documents to be used while tutoring
  • Maintaining accurate and timely records for students, tutors, and the tutoring program
  • Tracking volunteer and student hours on a quarterly basis through weekly reviews

What you bring as a candidate: (Any Equivalent Combination of Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education and Experience)
  • Bachelor's degree AND 1 or more years of experience working with adult learners, OR any combination of relevant education, training and experience that indicates successful performance of the essential functions of the position
  • Demonstrated excellent knowledge and experience in the use of technology and software such as Microsoft Office 365 Suite (Forms, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, OneNote, Outlook, SharePoint, Teams, and Word), Canvas, and PeopleSoft (CTCLink)
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Previous experience working with historically marginalized adult populations
  • Knowledge of teaching or tutoring techniques relevant to ESL, ABE, and GED learners
  • Prior experience or ability and willingness to mediate conflict when necessary
  • Awareness of needs and obstacles of adult learners
  • Demonstrated experience performing varied tasks within a structured timeframe
  • Ability to work well independently to prioritize tasks of self and others
  • High level of skill in organizing data and processes with firm deadlines

Physical Requirements:

Ability to perform range of physical motions, exerting up to 25 pounds; lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds; standing, walking, sitting for long periods of time, kneeling, squatting, and stooping; and traversing up and down stairs.
