The University of Nebraska–Lincoln, the flagship, land-grant, comprehensive public research university of the state of Nebraska is launching a national search to hire its first Vice Chancellor for Diversity and Inclusion. The university is a member of the Big Ten conference and the Big Ten Academic Alliance. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's enrollment is growing and becoming more diverse. Fall 2017 enrollment topped 26,000 – the highest and most diverse enrollment in the history of the university.
The Vice Chancellor will provide intellectual, strategic and visionary leadership for university goals surrounding diversity and inclusion. The Vice Chancellor will join a campus leadership team focused on creating a climate of belonging where all faculty, staff and students thrive. The Vice Chancellor will report to Dr. Donde Plowman, Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Academic Officer, and serve on the Chancellor's Cabinet, providing to the Chancellor annual campus metrics and progress towards university goals. The new Vice Chancellor will be charged immediately with the development of a holistic strategic plan for diversity and inclusion, which will include working with the Nebraska Commission 150 on the visioning process for the next 25 years as part of the university's sesquicentennial celebration.
To complement the long-term planning, Diversity Advocacy Workgroups were established to identify and prioritize short-term diversity initiatives, actions, efforts, or programs focused on three key themes: (1) Recruiting, retaining, and graduating a diverse student body; (2) Recruiting and retaining diverse faculty and staff toward building an inclusive campus culture; and (3) Developing a curriculum that supports the goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion. This work will inform long-term planning and be instrumental for the new Vice Chancellor in leveraging the momentum and energy on campus while capitalizing on the commitment of Nebraska's faculty, staff and students. The Vice Chancellor will establish a centralized diversity infrastructure and lead efforts to accomplish an agreed upon strategic plan and vision.
In fall 2017, for the thirteenth straight year, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln made U.S. News and World Report's annual evaluation of America's Best Colleges' list of Public National Universities, placing it among the top one-fourth of all public universities. Nebraska is ranked near the top third of all national universities both public and private. Started in 1996, the University of Nebraska McNair Scholars program is a nationally-recognized Department of Education TRIO program. Nebraska boasts 22 Rhodes Scholars and three Nobel laureates among its alumni. Nebraska is regularly named a top research institution whose students are awarded Fulbright scholarships and consistently succeed inprestigious national scholarship competitions. The university had a record eight faculty named AAAS fellows in 2015, tied for the second-most fellows behind Stanford's nine.
The City of Lincoln is an up-and-coming and safe city of nearly 300,000 and consistently ranks among the highest U.S. cities for livability thanks to a low cost of living, great schools, and friendly, community-minded residents. Lincoln's cost of living is 6.6% below the national average. Lincoln also has a flourishing business community and is the home of Nebraska's state government. Its highly educated workforce is very attractive to business expansion and new business development.
