Community College of Aurora

POSITION TITLE: Academic Coach, TRIO Student Support Services

POSITION NUMBER:

POSITION STATUS: Exempt, APT

REPORTS TO: Director, TRIO Student Support Services

SUPERVISES: N/A

POSITION SUMMARY: The newly formed Office of TRIO Programs (formerly part of the Student Success Center) at the Community College of Aurora is home to the TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Traditional program, the TRIO Student Support Services English as a Second Language (SSS-ESL) program, and the TRIO Upward Bound program. The Office of TRIO Programs is dedicated to increasing college access, college retention, college completion and transfer of eligible CCA students. The TRIO programs focus on students who are underrepresented in higher education, financially under-resourced, first-generation college students, students with disabilities, nontraditional or otherwise educationally disadvantaged students. We facilitate student transitions, build community and guide students through the completion of their two-year degree in preparation for a successful transition to a four-year institution or entry to the workforce.

The Upward Bound (UB) program is based primarily out of Aurora West College Preparatory Academy and provides support for students in 9th through 12th grade. UB participants receive one-on-one mentoring and support in developing academic plans and guidance towards meeting post-secondary enrollment goals. UB also establishes an environment for students to further cultivate their social, leadership, and other necessary skills to succeed in completing high school and post-secondary education. TRIO SSS programs are early in their existence at the Community College of Aurora. The TRIO SSS Traditional program began in 2010 while the TRIO SSS English as a Second Language program began in 2015. The SSS program is designed to help students navigate college policies and systems while also working towards addressing systemic and environmental barriers that prevent first-generation, low-income students from obtaining a post-secondary credential. The TRIO SSS programs provide group advising, one-on-one advising, peer mentoring, tutoring, four-year college visits, cultural events, and specific academic success workshops focused on career, transfer planning, financial literacy, and more.

This position will work with both of the TRIO Student Support Services programs - Traditional (Regular) and English as a Second Language. This position will advise students who are participants in both programs including students who are native English speakers as well as non-native English speakers. The programs generally represent a demographic makeup similar to the student demographic at CCA with students who were born in the US as well as students who are immigrants to the US. There is diversity in age, ethnicity, disabilities, and academic needs.

The TRIO SSS Academic Coach position is key to the success of CCA's TRIO Student Support Services grants.
