The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the broad area of Sport, Outdoor Recreation, and Tourism Management (SORT). A program that recognizes the intersection of these disciplines is seeking a candidate with a tourism background who can teach existing undergraduate courses in the core curriculum and develop topical courses within the candidate's expertise. Preference will also be provided to candidates with work experience in tourism and/or special events. The successful candidate will be expected to provide leadership for the tourism discipline; supervise internships and field experiences; advise undergraduate students; engage in community service; demonstrate productive scholarly activity including supervising student research; interact positively with colleagues; and serve on department/university committees.

UTC's blended sport, outdoor recreation, and tourism program offers a unique opportunity to capitalize on Chattanooga's emergent tourism destination status. Consequently, innumerable opportunities present themselves for students interested in gaining exposure to the architecture, promotion, and execution of sport, outdoor recreation, and tourism services.

Required Qualifications:
  • Earned doctorate in Tourism or related field at the time of appointment. ABD will be considered but the hire will be contingent upon completing the degree prior to the position's start date.
  • Ability to teach in the core SORT curriculum and tourism-specific courses.
  • Potential to produce peer-recognized scholarly work
  • Previous experience with community-university partnerships
  • Experience with online course delivery
  • Outstanding verbal and writing skills

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous university teaching experience
  • Experience with a community-engaged curriculum
  • Professional experience in the tourism industry
  • Demonstrated experience teaching, researching and/or design & implementations of outdoor and sport-related special events, festivals, etc.
  • Experience with new course development
  • Experience with advising and field/internship placements
