Job Description
University of Nevada Cooperative Extension at the University of Nevada, Reno seeks to fill a 12-month, full-time, tenure-track faculty position as a Natural Resource Specialist at the Assistant/Associate Professor level. This position will be an integral component of the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, and should have extensive collaboration with the Nevada Agricultural Experiment Station, and the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources.

The Extension Specialist position involves teaching, research, and service efforts addressing the issue of wildfire in Nevada through the Living With Fire program (http://www.livingwithfire.info/) and other initiatives. The program and initiatives focus on facilitating the implementation of the Nevada Wildland Fire Cohesive Strategy by providing needed information to cooperators and public to:

• Reduce the wildfire threat to Nevada communities through implementation Fire Adapted Community concepts.
• Increase the resiliency of natural landscapes through appropriate vegetation and fuel management
• Support the safe and effective suppression response to minimize wildfire losses to life and property.

Teaching activities include: neighborhood/community workshops, media interviews, social media, websites, train the trainer opportunities, production and distribution of peer-reviewed publications (peer -reviewed Extension and journal venues), presentation at professional conferences, organizing statewide conferences, one-on-one teaching opportunities, assisting local, state federal agency partners, and demonstration projects.

Research activities may include but are not necessarily limited to hazardous fuels management, management actions to reduce the risk if large catastrophic fire; social acceptance of wildfire hazard mitigation actions, fire adapted community program development and sustainability, Wildland Urban Interface trends in Nevada.

Service efforts include: Serving on University and cooperator committees and providing technical support to stakeholder organizations including, but not limited to the Nevada Network of Fire Adapted Communities, Nevada Fire Board, Nevada Division of Forestry Advisory Council, Nevada Fire Chief's Association.

Required Qualifications
A doctoral degree in one of the following fields: Natural Resource Management, Forestry, Rangeland Management; Fire Ecology; Wildland Fire Science or similar disciplines, with demonstrated knowledge of fire science and fuels management issues.

Candidates who have completed the doctoral degree may be hired at the Rank II (Assistant Professor) level, unless they have five plus years of appropriate experience post-graduation and adequate publication and funding records for Rank III (Associate Professor).

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in addressing wildland-urban interface fire issues at the community level.
• Possess effective public speaking skills ranging from professional conferences with colleagues as well as with lay audiences residing in high-wildfire hazard communities.
• Possess good writing skills both in terms being suitable for publishing in refereed journals as well producing publications suitable for the general public (e.g., newspaper articles, Extension publications, trade magazines) and use by residents of high-wildfire hazard communities.
• Ability to conceive of, develop, and utilize effective and creative educational tools (e.g., print, digital, social media, The Ember House, etc.).
• Familiarity with the landscapes, vegetation and fire regimes of Great Basin and eastern Sierra Nevada regions.
• Ability to effectively teach defensible space and ignition resistant construction concepts at the community level.
• Possess knowledge of fuel management methods (e.g., mechanical, herbicides, grazing and prescribed fire).
• Experience in developing, working with and leading collaborative efforts with interagency partners (e.g., U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, state division of forestry, and local fire service) and others (e.g., community representatives, insurance industry representatives, etc.).
• Experience in applying for and acquiring extra-mural funding.
• Experience in assessing and determining target audience educational needs regarding wildland-urban interface issues.
• Experience in assessing and documenting program impact.

Total Compensation
The total compensation package includes a negotiable competitive salary, moving expenses (if applicable), a rich retirement plan, health insurance options that include dental and vision, life insurance, long-term disability, annual and sick leave, along with many other benefits.
