Job Summary:

The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs for the University of San Francisco School of Law (Law School) provides administrative leadership for the Law School by ensuring compliance with external regulations and internal academic policies; leading curricular planning, implementation and troubleshooting efforts; enforcing and advising academic policies; managing several departments; and maintaining good relationships across all stakeholders. The Associate Dean will partner with the Dean and the Law School Leadership team to develop new sources of tuition revenue through innovative programs. The Associate Dean will also play a key role in developing and building out innovative programs. The Associate Dean reports to the Dean of the Law School and is a tenured/tenure track, or non-tenure track (term) member of the faculty.

Job Responsibilities:

The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs:
Ensures excellence, integrity and adherence to mission in all matters related to academic programming at the Law School.
Will help focus on developing new sources of tuition revenue through innovative programs.
Has responsibility for implementation and successful compliance with ABA regulations, including the requirements for programmatic assessment and review under the ABA and regional University accreditation standards.
Is responsible for equitable application of the Law Schools academic rules and policies, including honor code violations and the rules pertaining to grading curves, attrition, reexamination, probation, and readmission; and proposes evidence-supported revisions to policies to the Academic Standards Committee for consideration.
In collaboration with the Dean and interested faculty, facilitates curriculum development using learning theory, evidence-based research, and data-driven analyses of student learning outcomes with the aim of graduating successful and ethical lawyers.
Manages several departments related to educational programming, including: clinical and externship programs, the LLM programs, academic support programming, faculty services, and possibly others; maintains operational understanding of all departments in the Law School.
Ensures all departments are operating efficiently and productively by using the best analytical and management tools.
Represents the Law School at numerous student, alumnae, University, and legal community events, including by assisting with fundraising efforts as needed, and attends University committee and taskforce meetings where necessary and appropriate.
Prepares needed reports regarding academic matters for various audiences.
Assists the Dean with the recruitment, hiring, and evaluation of non-tenured faculty.
As a crucial member of the Deans leadership team assists in strategic planning, and contributes to the development and management of long-term goals, short-term demands, and immediate crises.
Demonstrates excellent communication skills and the interest and ability to apprise all stakeholders students, faculty, staff, alums, community members (including at the University) of significant developments at the law school.
Understands and appreciates the wealth of perspectives that diverse students, staff and faculty members bring to the Law School.
Is passionate about shaping the Law Schools educational programs in innovative ways to take account of ongoing changes in the nature of legal education, including through use of online instruction and new teaching technologies.

Minimum Requirements:

Must possess a JD from an ABA accredited School of Law.
At least 8 years of teaching experience or equivalent experience.
Demonstrated talent for academic administration, including by:
Assuming leadership roles on academic committees and projects,
Successfully developing and completing reports, studies, proposals, and
Demonstrating the ability to make and communicate difficult decisions and to fairly enforce rules and policies.
Understanding of Law Schools curricular and co-curricular programs and a demonstrated ability to develop and implement academic programming at the Law School.
Proven management and leadership skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a large, multifaceted, academic institution. Ability to build consensus and to handle crises and conflicts effectively.
Excellent interpersonal, time management, and oral and written communication skills.
Advanced analytical skills with demonstrated ability to identify and creatively solve problems using data driven and cost-benefit analyses. Experience in risk-assessment and budget analysis is a plus.
A genuine interest and enthusiasm in working with faculty, students, and staff and a strong interest in curricular improvement and assessment principles and practices.
