Job Summary:

GENERAL SCOPE OF POSITION:
Reporting to the Director of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS), the Associate Director performs duties in the two primary functional areas of institutional immigration compliance and student support services to fulfill the mission of the office, division and university. As part of the first area of responsibility the Associate Director will supervise the Program Assistant (one FTE staff member) to ensure our front office operations effectively meet students immigration related needs. Additionally, the Associate Director will advise both international students and scholars in matters related to immigration and issues of personal and social adjustment. The second functional area includes responsibility for initiating retention programs and services that promote a positive student experience. USF enrolls approximately 1700 international students, we have over 350 students on Post-Completion OPT, and an additional 30 international scholars.

Job Responsibilities:

ACCOUNTABILITY:
As part of the larger USF community, the Associate Director for International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) collaborates and cooperates across divisions and departments to create a supportive University community which encourages student learning and development in the Jesuit Catholic tradition and commits to:

Identifying problems at the departmental level and implementing solutions

Actively modeling collaboration by developing relationships and collaborative projects within and beyond the ISSS team

Providing experiences that challenge students to develop spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, physically, socially, culturally and morally in order to prepare them to contribute to the University community
Drawing out the leadership qualities inherent in every individual, and to providing opportunities for students to apply knowledge and skills

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serves as a Designated School Official and Alternate Responsible officer with federal agencies for USF
Supervise the Program Assistant (one FTE staff member).
Supervises the Program Assistant to ensure all front desk operations are consistent with immigration regulations
Ensure ISSS is communicating clear and accurate immigration related information through our front desk, website, handouts and email communication.
Ensure the ISSS intake and return procedures are efficient and follow the best practices possible.
Collaborate and advise the SEVIS Administrator and International Student Advisor to ensure student requests are managed properly and efficiently in our database.
Inform and collaborate with the SEVIS Administrator and International Student Advisor of data needs for the best communication and service to students.
In absence of the Director, take a leadership role in responding to student crisis and other immediate inquiries.
Collaborates with internal and external staff to ensure that accurate data is collected and maintained in appropriate databases
Provides accurate information as requested by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and the U.S. Department of State (DOS) in accordance with federal regulations, FERPA (Federal Educational Right to Privacy Act) guidelines, and campus policies
Works independently and as a team with other staff members to make decisions regarding the application of complex DHS and DOS rules and regulations in relation to the SEVIS program
Presents workshops on SEVIS and other immigration issues to students, scholars, and other campus staff
Advise students and scholars on immigration procedures and regulations to ensure maintenance of immigration status.
Authorize and issue immigration (Dept. of Homeland Security) and Department of State documents to international students and scholars.
Provides leadership in working with the other ISSS staff to plan, implement and assess orientation programs for international students and scholars
In collaboration with the Director, assist with international retention programs and services through efforts that provide a welcoming and supportive environment for international students
Collaborates with offices and departments (e.g., Admission, Registrar, International Admission, Strategic Enrollment Management, Center for Academic and Student Achievement, Center for Global Education, English as a Second Language, etc.) to provide an integrated experience that helps international students navigate campus processes and the U.S. culture
Supports and implements assessment programs and efforts established by the Director on an on-going basis, sharing the findings and developing programs/strategies to meet the identified needs
Participates in committees, task force teams, planning groups, etc. as requested by the Director
Performs other duties as assigned by the Director.

Minimum Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS:
Masters degree in higher education administration, college student services administration or related field preferred. Bachelors degree required. Five to seven years of experience as a DSO/ARO and in the development of international student services related programs in higher education. Interest in working within the context of a diverse, Catholic and Jesuit University located in an urban, multicultural area. Experience in program development and educational outreach initiatives. Demonstrated knowledge of F-1 and J-1 regulations including SEVIS reporting requirements and knowledge of Department of Homeland Security regulations. Strong oral and written communication skills, including cross-cultural communication competencies, and the ability to advise and problem-solve around international student issues and concerns. Proven commitment to diverse perspectives, internationalization of institutional environments, and a quality work ethic. Preferred independent work style although responsive to supervision and able to work in a cooperative and collaborative manner. Able to fulfill evening and weekend work duties. NAFSA affiliation and experience working, living or studying abroad preferred. Language skills a plus.
