CLINICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST (Clinical Laboratory Scientist I)

Primary Duties:
Working under supervision of a physician laboratory director or higher level Clinical Laboratory Scientist, (CLS) the Clinical Laboratory Scientist I, as a licensed professional, is responsible for the performance of a wide variety of moderate to highly complex clinical laboratory tests and examinations. Clinical Laboratory Scientists primarily provide medical staff with essential data and information for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illness, diseases, and other conditions found within the university setting. Assignments typically include some or all of the following, diagnostic tests ordered by physician or other licensed practitioner, such as routine urinalysis, pregnancy tests, blood tests, and antibiotic sensitivity tests. The Clinical Lab Scientist collects specimens, prepares solutions and reagents, examines and interprets outcomes, and maintain a safe laboratory environment in accordance with established standards, protocols, and applicable federal and state regulations, such as the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA). Additional responsibilities include calibration and maintenance of equipment, as well as operational support and laboratory quality assurance.

Required Education:

Incumbents must possess the requisite education for licensing, which is a Bachelors degree in clinical laboratory science or equivalent from an accredited institution or equivalent post-secondary education, training and experience as defined by the California Division of Laboratory Science.

Combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.
AND
LICENSING/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Possess and maintain a valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license.

Special Requirements:
  • The duties of this position will include participation in a decision that may have a material/financial benefit to the incumbent. Therefore, this is a designated position under the California State Universitys Conflict of Interest Code and the incumbent will be required to file a Form 700: Statement of Economic Interest and is subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.
  • A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position. This considered a sensitive position. Current CSU, Chico employees are subject to a background check (including a criminal record check) if voluntarily moving into a sensitive position, regardless of any background checks previously conducted. Incumbent is responsible for the safety and security of Level 1 data, sometimes also referred to as Level 1 protected data.   • The selected candidate must pass a post-offer pre-employment physical examination and vision tests including distance vision, color blindness, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Incumbent/applicant will need to be able to perform the essential job functions (duties) of this position with or without reasonable accommodation. This is a typical walk-in clinic environment, requiring the use of standard office and laboratory equipment. Personal protective clothing required while working such as laboratory coats, closed-toe shoes, safety glasses, latex gloves. Employee will be required to frequently sit, move, or stand at a counter as well as moving in small spaces within the lab. Also includes the need to sit or work at a microscope and computer terminal for long periods of time. There is exposure to a heat source used when sterilizing while plating cultures. There is also noise exposure from centrifuge and other equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed in a busy diverse health care environment. Will work with bio-hazardous materials and chemicals after appropriate training. Moderate noise levels exist at various times in the laboratory. Tools used in the clinical laboratory setting including pipettes syringes, tubes, laboratory glassware as well as cell counters, centrifuges, heat blocks and incubators, Genprobe system, spectophotometers, vortexers and rotators, etc.
