Job Description
University Police Services is currently recruiting for a Police Commander who demonstrates loyalty, strong leadership skills, the ability to collaborate and who can work cooperatively with department employees in implementing department goals and objectives. The successful candidate should also demonstrate the capacity to be a strategic thinker, an appreciation of diversity, and possess strong leadership and problem solving skills. This position is an administrative faculty position and serves as a member of the senior leadership of Police Services.

The Commander is responsible for policy & procedure development and implementation; supervision of the various programs to include the Student Cadet Program, the Reserve (part-time officer) Policing Program, K-9, special projects, training & research, special events; review citizen complaints, investigate allegations of subordinate misconduct and recommending disciplinary actions and overall support of department's initiatives. This position reports through the Assistant Chief of Police to the Assistant Vice President & Director of Police Services.

University Police Services is a team of trained professionals, dedicated to a community-policing philosophy as they provide law enforcement services to the 40,000 students, faculty and staff of the University of Nevada, Reno, Truckee Meadows Community College and the Desert Research Institute.

The University of Nevada, Reno offers a number of event venues, including the 32,500-seat Mackay Stadium, home to Nevada Wolf Pack football, and the 14,000-seat Lawlor Events Center, home to Nevada Wolf Pack men's and women's basketball and year-round public events. The University of Nevada is an NCAA Division I institution with 16 highly competitive athletic programs. This statewide institution includes the 433-acre main campus with 261 buildings near downtown Reno, where University Police headquarters is located. An additional fully functional and staffed police substation is located on the campus of Truckee Meadows Community College.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and five years OR Master's degree and three years related professional work experience. Related Experience: law enforcement or military experience with two or more years in an administrative or managerial capacity in law enforcement.

Basic Nevada Police Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Certification or the ability to obtain one within 12 months of hire date.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience in law enforcement in an educational institution.

Schedule
This position is required to respond to crime scenes, major events and incidents, or as needed or requested by the Assistant Vice President & Director of Police Services, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Department Information
The department is a full-service police department comprised of patrol operations, administration and a detective division. Services include a canine program, walking and bicycle patrols, and a pro-active, selective traffic enforcement program and takes a leadership role in preparing the University to respond to large-scale crises and events. The department consists of 73 employees (37 full-time sworn officers, 6 sworn part-time, 8 non-sworn part-time, 12 students, and 10 full & part-time civilian support staff). The patrol area for Police Services encompasses all Nevada System of Higher Education facilities in the Reno Metropolitan area, which is approximately 106 square miles, and some facilities statewide.
