Salary range: $3,515 - $5,818 per month (Anticipated hiring range $3,515 - $4,166)
Note: This is a full-time (40-hours per week) probationary, exempt position

Organizational Description

University Advancement ensures that a strong and consistent brand inspires and deepens the University's bond with the public it serves. As such, it advances the brand objectives (and ultimately those of the University Strategic Plan) by executing on best marketing and communications practices.

Overview

Under the direction of the Director of University Communications, the Communications Specialist (Writer) supports University Communications and Advancement by developing, writing, monitoring, and/or editing a variety of print or electronically-based communication materials, as well as assisting the team in coordinating related internal and external communications, including social media, community and public relations activities.
This position serves in a general role to help with University Communications projects with an emphasis on writing campus news stories. The Communications Specialist will be expected to collaborate with others in University Communications and to assist higher level employees on a variety of communications/marketing projects.
The Communications Specialist will be expected to work independently on assigned projects while assisting and working with the other members of the Communications team. Work is performed under general supervision and requires the regular exercise of judgment and discretion to interpret policies, procedures, and objectives. This position will also interact with a variety of people, be creative, maintain high quality journalism and public relations standards, and adapt to conditions in an often fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Under the director, this position is also responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with relevant internal and external constituents to ensure that the public receives relevant, timely, and positive information about the university and its programs. This person should develop a strong understanding of the University's marketing objectives and strategic plan to best communicate brand standards in all messaging. This position can also be assigned specific responsibilities relative to the ongoing management of communication materials on the campus website.
The employee shall allocate priority and time to duties mentioned below based upon direction from the manager to whom this employee reports. The manager will communicate priorities and time allocation.

Position Summary

Write and edit campus news stories, articles related to Fresno State, and press releases
Research and generate original content for stories and articles
Monitor and post on social media
Assist with press conferences and media interviews
Assist with emergency communications during crises
All other duties as assigned by supervisor
Secondary Duties of the job include:
Work with other communication specialists on campus to coordinate campus news stories in a strategic manner
Maintain content on Fresno State news website
Work with student interns to complete press releases and social media posts
Act as a media spokesperson if needed

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Working knowledge of and ability to apply standard theories, practices, principles and techniques related to communications in the public affairs, media, and/or marketing areas
Working knowledge of marketing and research techniques and methods
Thorough knowledge of and ability to use effectively media outlets including planning media coverage and media publicity campaigns for the university and events
Thorough knowledge of web communication techniques, vehicles and formats
Knowledge of interview techniques and the ability to define and deliver media messages
Exceptional interpersonal skills, including strong public speaking, listening and interpretive skills
Strong story development and journalistic writing skills, as well as advanced editorial skills
Demonstrated ability to keep abreast of campus events and subject matter expertise in relation to current events to identify and capitalize on media opportunities that will promote the university and increase positive media coverage
Working knowledge of copyright and other applicable laws pertaining to publications and the media
Ability to:
Build and manage more sophisticated media contacts
Effectively use web technology to achieve communication goals
Analyze and select pertinent facts and integrate them into communication vehicles
Apply market research to identify communication needs and target audiences
Apply appropriate statistical techniques and methods to research
Provide lead work direction

Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree
Three years of experience in journalism or public relations

Specialized Skills

Ability to work unusual and extended hours


Preferred Skills

Working knowledge of protocols and etiquette related to public relations and media relations
Four or more years of experience in journalism or public relations
One or more years of experience in social media
Experience writing in AP style
Knowledge of the local media market
Familiarity with Fresno State
