Employment Status:

Full-time, "exempt" position, included in the Management Personnel Plan (MPP).

Work Schedule:
Monday - Friday from 8:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. Occasional evenings and weekends as needed.

Typical Activities
About the Position:
Reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean provides academic and administrative leadership to the seven departments and one interdisciplinary program in the College. These departments are Art, Communication Studies, English, Music, Philosophy, Theatre Arts, and World Languages and Literatures. Liberal Studies is an interdisciplinary major program shared among three colleges and administratively housed in Arts and Letters; it is the largest subject matter preparation program for the multiple subject credential. The College's graduate program includes a MFA in Studio Art and a MA in Communication Studies, English Composition, and Spanish. The Art, Music and Theatre Arts programs are accredited (NASAD, NASM, and NAST), in addition to the WASC accreditation for the entire College. The College also hosts interdisciplinary minor programs, such as American Studies, Philosophy, Policy, and Economics and area studies of Latin America and Asia. The Dean also oversees operations of the Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum of Art (RAFFMA), which is accredited by the American Museum Association, and serves on the Museum Advisory Board. Typical responsibilities include, but not limited to:
  • Manage all college resources (fiscal, facilities, and personnel)
  • Support and promote high quality educational programs
  • Oversee curriculum planning and development, and the quarter-to-semester conversion
  • Increase community-university engagement activities, high impact practice opportunities and curricular and co-curricular service learning opportunities for students
  • Promote excellence in faculty teaching, scholarship and discovery
  • Recruit and retain quality and diverse faculty
  • Conduct faculty and staff periodic and performance reviews
  • Advance CSU's Graduation Initiative 2025, CSUSB's Strategic Plan, and Academic Affairs and College goals and priorities
  • Engage in collaborative efforts with faculty, committees, Department Chairs and Program Coordinators, the Academic Affairs Leadership Team, University leadership, Student Affairs, and community partners
  • Prepare and/or contribute to a variety of reports related to the college; oversee accreditation efforts; and provide recommendations to the Provost
  • Sustain an environment of academic excellence and collegiality
  • Build and maintain close relationships with alumni and the community
  • Secure partnerships and funding to facilitate growth and innovation
  • Support, leverage and expand CSUSB's research agenda
  • Collaborate with University Advancement on marketing strategies and announcements to promote the college


Minimum Qualifications
Education:
A terminal degree or earned doctorate in one of the disciplines represented in the college from an accredited institution

Experience:
  • Record of accomplishment in teaching, scholarship and service sufficient to warrant a tenured appointment at the rank of Professor
  • Previous leadership position as chair or director; and demonstrated record of success in fiscal, personnel and programmatic management
  • Commitment to shared governance in a collective bargaining environment
  • Commitment to promoting diversity in all its forms; and demonstrated ability to interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse community
  • Successful record of community engagement and fundraising
  • Stellar oral and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Rank of Professor preferred, but not required.
  • Demonstrated administrative experience at Department Chair or above.
  • Graduate Faculty status preferred, but not required

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU.
