Director, Simulation Learning

Responsibilities
The Director of Simulation Learning is responsible for creating a shared multi-year programmatic vision in coordination with key stakeholders and for planning, designing, implementing, and evaluating simulation-based learning across the continuum from standardized patients through high-fidelity simulators.

Primary responsibilities include management of the simulation center, coordination of simulation activities across programs and departments, faculty development, future planning guiding in use of the simulation for research on medical education. This position reports to the Dean of Academic Affairs.

Under the direction of the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs and Assistant Dean of Clinical Medicine, the Director of Simulation Learning will collaborate with the Vice Chairs of Clinical Medicine, Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, and Basic Sciences as well as the Clinical Faculty, Clerkships and Course Directors to perform the following job responsibilities which include but are not limited to:
  • Manage the overall use and integration of the School of Medicine's simulation resources including Standardized Patient labs and Simulated OR, ER, Telemedicine and Medical Skills activities.
  • Coordinate curricular integration of simulation including standardized patients throughout the academic programs of the schools and with interprofessional initiatives.
  • Designs and implements educational programs for faculty development and continuing education in use of simulation and innovations in clinical education.
  • Oversees the collection of data on learning outcomes for simulation exercises and collaborates with faculty on disseminating findings.
  • Coordinate the development of curricular integration of state-of- the-art instructional technologies/simulation throughout the academic programs of the school and with interprofessional education initiatives.
  • Designs and implements educational programs for faculty development in use of clinical simulation, debriefing, and assessment.
  • Designs and evaluates clinical simulation curriculum to ensure that expected competencies are being taught to students.
  • Ensures that instruction is consistent with national professional standards to assure skill and knowledge competencies of graduates.
  • Prepares reports on all program activities, standards, accreditation requirements, external meetings, educational concerns, and student successes.
  • Develop and enforce policies and procedures to ensure the safe, effective, and efficient use of the lab space, equipment, and supplies.
  • Plans for replacement of existing equipment and purchase of new technology
  • Manages costs, revenues, and Budget for the simulation center.
  • Collaborates with Information Technology professionals to design and deliver onsite, web-based or distance learning simulation experiences. Collaborates and assists with IRB-approved research studies.
  • Ensure that quality assurance systems are in place, utilize and effective.
  • Direct supervision of ICC Associate Director (i.e.: expectation and goal setting, coaching/feedback, monitoring progress, etc.).
  • Provides indirect supervision of other staff and standardized patients supervised by ICC Associate Director
  • Performs other all duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education: Master's degree in education, health professions, or a related field.

Experience: 3-5 years' experience in simulation-based education and training, evaluation of outcomes, patient safety, and implementation of innovative simulation-based education and training programs necessary, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Experience in curriculum development and assessment for adult learners.

Skills:
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, implement, and evaluate patient simulation scenarios
  • Current with simulation education research and practice.
  • Familiarity with use and maintenance of simulation equipment.
  • Collaborative approach to working with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ability to handle all situations with tact, professionalism, and diplomacy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to represent simulation resources internally and to external constituencies.
  • Capable of working with actors who serve as standardized patients.
  • Strong project management, budget and leadership skills.
  • Proficient with learning management systems, database management : Specifically SimIQ EMS system
