About the Position:

The Veteran Resource Center provides comprehensive services to military-connected students that support personal, academic, and professional success. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as the Director of Veterans Resource Center. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude, an active, energetic mind, and a leadership style that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

Cal State Fullerton (CSUF) is pleased to invite applications for a creative, collaborative and strategic leader to serve as the Director of the Veterans Resource Center (VRC). The Director provides overall guidance and leadership in the development, planning, and implementation of comprehensive services and programs that support the success of the individual student veteran, the veteran campus community, and for veteran's dependents who are eligible for benefits from the federal or state governments. Provides leadership and management for the VRC, including veteran's certification. Ensures all efforts are aligned with the University's and Student Affairs' strategic plan and goals. Responsible for forging effective working relationships with staff, faculty and community service agencies to provide appropriate student support, referrals and access to resources. Explores current issues as they relate to military veterans returning to college and provide solution-oriented problem solving and program development that supports student veteran academic achievement, engagement in High Impact Practices, and student veteran retention and graduation. Interviews, hires, supervises and participates in the training of full-time staff, student assistants, VA work-study, and student interns. Provides student support counseling when necessary. Ensures the campus is in compliance with Veterans Administration and other required guidelines in the veterans certification process, especially as it pertains to the maintenance of student records, setting and maintaining the certification calendar, and in ensuring the campus meets or exceeds VA accountability/reporting requirements. Promotes an environment of inclusion and cultural sensitivity and serves as a first point of response to veterans and/or veterans dependents who raise issues or concerns about the services provided by the campus. Serves as a representative at local, state and federal meetings pertaining to veterans' matters. Responsible for the assessment of services and program goals and prepares ongoing and end-of-year reports, participates in grant writing and other fundraising efforts. Other duties as assigned.




Essential Qualifications:
Master's degree from an accredited four-year college or university is required with a minimum of five years of progressively responsible student affairs experience in student retention and/or student success programs on a university campus. Experience working with a diverse student body is essential. Working knowledge of the practices, procedures, and activities of a college based veterans support program. Knowledge of the holistic advising process; working knowledge of veterans benefits and certification process; general knowledge of the methods and problems associated with program management; ability to interpret and apply program policies; ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and implementing program improvements; ability to advise students individually and in groups; ability to rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation. Knowledge of student veteran challenges, concerns, and opportunities within a university setting. Experience in progressively complex student services work. Demonstration of excellent written and oral communication skills to enable collaboration with faculty, staff, and university administrators. Proficiency with computers and common software.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Special Working Conditions:
The scope of responsibilities for this position includes the making or participating in the making of decisions that may have a material financial benefit on the incumbent. Therefore, you will be required to file an initial Conflict of Interest Form 700: Statement of Economic Interests within thirty (30) days from date of hire and on an annual basis; and complete the CSU sponsored ethics on-line training within thirty (30) days of appointment, and at least once during each consecutive period of two calendar years following the appointment.
