Information Security Analyst

Position Status: Administrative Exempt Positions

Basic Function:
Under the direction of the Associate Director for Information Security, the Information Security Analyst provides technical analysis, system development and support for the software and hardware managed by Information Security for the purpose of securing WPI systems, and data and to be in compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Information Security Analysts are expected to stay current with security methodologies and threats, develop tools and tactics for monitoring vulnerabilities and network activity, and support recovery activities if incidents occur.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform network traffic monitoring and analysis using intrusion detection systems and sniffers to identify system compromises, network anomalies, identify vulnerability trends and potential threads to the WPI community.
    Provide daily system administration, including log analysis, daily backups, patching and upgrades, to all Information Security systems.
    Maintain existing programs and scripts to maintain daily security operations
    Build or program new solutions as necessary to support IPv6 deployment initiatives, asset security history tracking, and log management.
    Support advanced malware analysis and cleanup escalated from the WPI Service Desk
    Under direction of the ISO, gather information to support investigation of intrusion incidents
    Support compliance and regulation initiatives by providing technical security requirements analysis and recommendations
    Implement and support bandwidth management and firewall technology by learning and using vendor supplied technologies from Palo Alto Networks and Juniper Networks
    Provide input to WPI Policies, Procedures and Standards related to information security and management
    Attain professional expertise by attending external courses/seminars in information security as well as reading published material and staying engaged with various information security communities
    Support disaster recovery planning and documentation
    Maintain information security documentation
    Oversee student workers assigned to the Information Security unit.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

    Position Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering or a related discipline or 5-year relevant experience
    Programming experience in one of the following languages: Python, Perl, Ruby, C#, C, or Java
    Experience in managing both Windows and Linux operating systems
  • Knowledge of common networking environments such as DNS, DHCP, IPv6, and WLANs
    Knowledge of open source security tools such as Snort, Argus, NMAP, Nessus, Wireshark, etc.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with all members of the WPI Community
  • Have the ability to work under pressure with frequent interruptions
  • Individual will be required to submit to a background examination
