Job Summary
The Women's Birth Center at Michigan Medicine is seeking an Inpatient Unit Clerk to provide excellent customer service to our patients and stellar clerical support to our nurses and doctors. This is a communication-heavy position requiring good interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work as a team

Responsibilities*
  • Utilize extensive on-the-job training to complete tasks.
  • Admit, transfer and discharge patients in the Women's Birth Center.
  • Receive and assist patients and visitors, providing excellent customer service.
  • Answer patient calls in a professional and timely manner.
  • Process physician orders and referrals.
  • Respond to emergent situations in a calm and professional manner utilizing predefined processes.
  • Record and coordinate patient appointments and tests.
  • Procure supplies, equipment and services for patients.
  • Maintain census information.
  • Monitor infant security system.
  • Communicate effectively and timely with staff.

Required Qualifications*
  • Customer service experience
  • Computer experience
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize tasks based on level of importance
  • Ability to work with many details with accuracy

Completion of high school diploma or equivalent

Desired Qualifications*
Previous experience as an inpatient clerk in a medical setting desired. MiChart/Epic experience.
  • Previous experience as an inpatient clerk.
  • Previous experience working in a medical or healthcare setting.
  • Considerable knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Data entry experience.

Work Schedule
  • Various shifts available
  • Positive work-life balance with 8 and/or 12 hour shifts possible
  • Between 24 and 40 hours per week
  • Will require working every weekend during temporary status (every other weekend as permanent staff) and some holidays.
  • Seven weeks of fulltime training is required; training may occur on days (7:10 am - 3:40 pm), evening (3:20 pm - 11:50 pm) and/or midnight shift (11:30 pm-7:30 am)

Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
