    SALARY & PERSONNEL BENEFITS:
    The current salary schedule range for an entering tenure-track faculty member is $60,856 - $95,406 plus an earned doctoral bonus of $3,042.80. Depending on the entry step, the faculty member advances one-step each year and has the potential to reach the current maximum step of $121,454, depending on the educational level attained. Starting salary is commensurate with academic preparation and full-time related, paid experience. In addition to salary, each full-time employee participates in a "cafeteria style" health and welfare benefits program.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITION:
    Commencing Fall 2021, a full-time tenure-track faculty position will be available in the Journalism Department. Responsibilities include teaching journalism and mass communication courses and serving as the faculty adviser to TheChannels.org. TheChannels.org is a multiple award-winning student-run online news publication with a robust local-to-international readership. The successful candidate for this position will oversee all business- and technology-related responsibilities and supervise students creating the editorial product. This candidate must also demonstrate a passionate commitment to students' First Amendment freedoms; a bedrock knowledge of journalistic practices, reportorial skills, and ethics; and an ability to recruit, motivate, and retain student journalists. Other responsibilities include participation in the governance of the college via committee assignments and maintenance of sufficient office hours to meet student needs. Involvement in activities designed to improve teaching and particularly the application of technology to the instructional process is expected.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    Candidates must possess the minimum qualifications for the discipline as approved by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors and defined in the Minimum Qualifications for Faculty and Administrators in California Community Colleges handbook.

    1. Master's in journalism or communication with a specialization in journalism OR

    Bachelor's in either of the above AND

    Master's in English, history, communication, literature, composition, comparative literature, any social science, business, business administration, marketing, graphics or photography

    OR the equivalent.

    2. Evidence of a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, culture, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff.

    3. Possess a combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent to all of the above. Candidates making an application on the basis of equivalency must submit an Application for Equivalency in addition to all other required material.

    If the title of your degree as stated on your transcripts DOES NOT EXACTLY MATCH one of the
    degree titles listed in the minimum qualifications listed above, you must request an equivalency review and submit conclusive supporting documents at the time of application. Those documents include a completed SBCC Equivalency Crosswalk and a narrative synopsis of your educational background justifying equivalency.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience as a faculty adviser for a student news publication;
  • Experience working in the print and web-based journalism industry, including but not limited to reporting, writing, editing and news production for print and/or web-based/multimedia platforms;
  • Teaching and professional experience in multimedia, broadcast, and digital journalism, reporting and on-air performing and reporting, both face-to-face and online/hybrid, at the community college level;
  • Knowledge of and/or training in news production, journalistic theory and skills, ethics, law, web-based/social media, mass communication theory, or other relevant subjects;
  • Demonstrated willingness to work with students both in and outside of class, potentially including travel to regional, state, and national conventions;
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to issues of diversity, and ability to motivate and teach community college students of diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds, sexual orientations, genders, cultures, and learning styles, as well as students with disabilities or varied levels of academic preparation.

    Selection Procedure:
    The selection committee, who will recommend candidates for personal interviews at SBCC, will initially review online applications. A teaching demonstration will be required for selected applicants. After the initial interviews have been conducted, the committee will recommend the top candidates to the Superintendent/President for a final interview. The successful candidate's name will then be presented to the Board of Trustees for final approval and authorization to hire.
