KAVLI INSTITUTE FOR THEORETICAL PHYSICS

Graduate Fellowships

The Graduate Fellowship program offers a unique opportunity for a select group of physics doctoral students to spend a minimum of 5 months (and up to 6 months) at KITP, participate in KITP research programs, and broaden their understanding of physics in areas of current research. KITP is committed to hosting a diverse group of scientists as graduate fellows.

To be considered, a candidate must be a current PhD student, remain employed by their home institution, and commit to staying at KITP for 5-6 months. Candidates may apply directly or be nominated by their PhD advisor. In either case, the candidate will provide KITP with a CV and a 500-word essay that answers the question: "How will working at KITP during this Graduate Fellowship appointment advance my development as a physicist?"

The candidate's PhD adviser must provide a letter of recommendation. In the case of a nomination, the nomination letter serves as the letter of recommendation. Additional letters of support are not necessary. The nominator should describe the student, explain why they are suitable for such a program, and note how they may contribute to diversity at KITP. The candidate's adviser should acknowledge the minimum 5-month stay required in this program.

The candidate's adviser should also acknowledge that KITP Graduate Fellows remain paid employees of their home institutions, and are only provided KITP support in the form of reimbursement for local expenses (lodging and meals) up to a maximum of $2200/month. Some assistance with round-trip travel between the Fellow's home institution and KITP may also be provided.

For additional information about KITP, visit www.kitp.ucsb.edu. To apply, please complete the form at www.kitp.ucsb.edu/apply/fellowships/graduate-fellowship-program.

For Spring 2023 participation, nominations must be received by September 15, 2022.

For Fall 2023 participation, nominations must be received by February 1, 2023.

The department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service.
