Job Summary/Basic Function:
General Description:
Manages operational and instructional activities in the Civil and Environmental Engineering departmental research laboratories and undergraduate teaching laboratories. Ensures that laboratories have an assigned qualified and trained assistant and that the laboratories operate according to departmental and national guidelines with respect to safety and pedagogy. Develops and recommends new experiments and demonstrations, and instructs and supervises Teaching Assistants in procedures, policies and teaching techniques.

Essential Job Functions:
Manages laboratories by maintaining, calibrating and upgrading laboratory equipment, software and computers as needed. Ensures that required equipment and chemical list is available, requesting reagents and materials for teaching lab use; maintaining general laboratory and safety supplies; equipping student lockers with equipment; performing routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and computers; and ensuring availability of labeled containers for hazardous waste and broken glass. Suggests new equipment for laboratories as necessary.

Maintains computerized list of all chemicals, including quantity and location; providing annual physical inventory check; maintaining safety data sheet (SDS) files for each chemical with computerized database in compliance with legal requirements.

Interfaces with faculty to understand goals and objectives for laboratory classes and ensures lab assignments further those goals. Identifies improvements and/or new experiments which might better meet course and national professional objectives.

Supervises, reviews, schedules and trains Graduate Teaching Assistants and other university employees in laboratory teaching techniques and safe laboratory practices. Develops policies and procedures so that workloads of Graduate Teaching Assistants are distributed evenly and faculty expectations for the teaching assistants are constant. Provides training on such topics as reading outputs from equipment used in the teaching labs, laboratory and data record procedures;

Supervising storeroom/materials and assistants at critical lab times; ensuring quality of materials and reagents supplied; and troubleshooting and resolving erroneous results when linked to materials, computers or equipment. Oversees equipment and apparati by organizing and supervising check-in and check-out; ordering, installing, updating and maintaining computerized systems for research data collection and storage of data and overseeing student access to laboratories.

Works in conjunction with department staff and faculty to develop standard operating procedures, and safety and security policies. Keeps a daily journal of lab activities and incidents.

Monitors laboratory projects with regard to progress and cost. Compiles statistics such as laboratory utilization figures, projects enrollments and surveys other departments at the national level.

Performs semi-annual physical inventories of and monitoring arrival and placement of capital and electronic equipment; and assisting physical plant with access and logistics.

Minimum Qualifications:
Job Requirements:
Education Required: Bachelors degree or higher in engineering or a related science.

Experience Required: At least two years of experience in research and/or engineering

This job title performs under minimal supervision and is responsible for planning, organizing and directing most aspects pertaining to laboratory functions pertaining to data collection, process management, development of standard operating procedures, and outcomes monitoring

This job title requires a comprehensive, practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgement and decision-making abilities appropriate to the work environment on the College.

This job title does research for documents, compiles data for computer entry, and/or enters or oversees data entry, storage and back-up. Has responsibility for monitoring budget/fiscal expenditures (typically non-discretionary expenditures) for a work unit of less than department size or for capital projects.

This job title must successfully complete a 24 hour Hazardous Waste Course.

Physical Requirements: Medium exerting 20-50 lbs occasionally, 10-25 lbs frequently, or up to 10 lbs constantly. Requires walking or standing to a significant degree.
