JOB SUMMARY:
This position works daily with Art faculty and students primarily in the areas of sculpture, furniture design, 3-D design. This position requires knowledge and experience of the safe use and maintenance of welding and wood shop machinery and upkeep of facilities to maintain OSHA, Hazmat and safety requirements.

This employee reports directly to the Dean of Creative Arts.

DEFINITION:
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform a variety of laboratory duties in support of instruction in an Art department including an assigned laboratory in sculpture, and perform duties as needed in painting, ceramics laboratory. Order, receive, store, maintain, and issue laboratory supplies, tools and equipment.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  1. Maintain art laboratory facilities for day, evening, and weekend classes.
  2. Maintain records for hazardous waste management in the division including compliance with OSHA standards and regulations for safety and fire.
  3. Provide proper use and safety training of equipment and maintain a safety manual and administer safety exams to students, staff and faculty utilizing facilities.
  4. Provide knowledge of basic principles, practices and procedures of basic plumbing and electrical work as it relates to the assigned laboratory equipment.
  5. Assist students with utilizing lab tools, materials, and equipment in a safe and proper manner; answer technical questions; tutor students in assigned lab as necessary; demonstrate proper use of equipment and materials.
  6. Prepare and set up tools, equipment and materials for demonstrations, experiments, or instruction for the assigned lab; inspect lab for safety hazards and make corrections as necessary; demonstrate safety procedures as necessary.
  7. Order, issue and inventory supplies and equipment; assure the safe and proper storage of supplies, materials and equipment.
  8. Prepare and maintain a variety of records related to assigned laboratory duties.
  9. Operate a variety of assigned laboratory power machinery, equipment specific to the assignment; perform minor repairs as needed.
  10. Perform administrative duties as assigned; monitor assigned budget expenditures.
  11. Communicate with other departments to exchange information and provide technical support as necessary; monitor the progress of students and discuss with faculty as needed.
  12. Attend various meetings as required.
  13. Perform a variety of clerical duties related to the assigned instructional laboratory.
  14. Monitor and provide direction to student assistants as assigned.
  15. Perform related duties as assigned.

  2. Perform a variety of duties in support of an assigned laboratory.
  3. Order, receive, store, maintain and issue laboratory supplies and equipment.
  4. Assist students in the use and operation of assigned laboratory equipment and materials.
  5. Perform minor repairs on equipment.
  6. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  7. Maintain accurate records.
  8. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
  2. Any combination equivalent to an Associate's degree in an assigned area of expertise, or related field AND three (3) years related instructional laboratory experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Associate's degree in or successful completion of college level Art courses in wood and metal sculpture, painting and ceramics.
  2. Two (2) years professional experience as a woodworker, furniture maker, welder, plastics-mold maker.
  3. Experience in hazardous waste management, safety regulations, OSHA regulations and procedures.
  4. Proficiency in computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel.

  6. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching.
  7. Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling heavy objects up to 30 lbs.
