Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for six Laboratory Technician 1s for the Nevada State Public Health Laboratory. ***These positions do not provide layoff rights and are contingent upon funding.

Laboratory Technician I's responsibilities include general lab support such as: sample/supply receiving, data entry, maintenance and mailing of supplies to clients, sample processing, customer service, courier service, delivering and making of appropriate reagents/supplies for testing departments, sample preparation for testing, assisting Clinical Laboratory Scientists and environmental chemistry personnel in performing test methods and autoclaving waste regularly. In addition, purchasing of supplies/reagents, payment of invoices, generation of client invoices, preparation and posting of deposits and other clerical accounting duties is required. Samples may include infectious agents and/or chemical hazards. Responsibilities inclusive of IT hardware/software support will be included as appropriate. Proper PPE and safety guidelines must be followed at all times. Duties listed above may provide support for a 24-hour/7-day a week operation to assure required public health laboratory services in Nevada are available and completed in a timely fashion.

Required Qualifications

Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two (2) years of laboratory experience performing various laboratory procedures; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.

This position requires having a valid driver's license at time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.

This position requires frequent exposure to hazardous materials including: compressed gas cylinders, concentrated acids and bases, and potentially infectious diseases.

This position requires passing a typing test at the time of interview.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with experience working in a licensed clinical or environmental laboratory are encouraged to apply.

Candidate who type >40 WPM are encouraged to apply.

Schedule

The typical work schedule varies this is subject to change based on organizational needs.

Staff are expected to respond to emergency calls during scheduled and nonscheduled work hours to assist with local or State emergency requiring laboratory support.

This position is designated as Essential Personnel. In the event of a campus emergency, special event, closure to maintain campus safety or operations, this position may be required to work outside of regularly scheduled hours.
