MECHANICAL TECHNICIAN (Equipment Technician II)

Primary Duties:
Working independently under general supervision, the Mechanical Technician is responsible for the skilled maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, calibration, and assembly of mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrically powered instructional support equipment and systems. This position primarily serves the Plumas Hall mechanical laboratories and will support instructional and extra-curricular student activity in these laboratory spaces. Additionally, incumbent is responsible for supervision of paid and unpaid student assistants, and ensuring that lab safety, security, and hygiene policies are followed and enforced. Other duties may occasionally be assigned as determined by the Lead Technician and Technical Shop Supervisor. This position requires knowledge of machine tools including mills, lathes, power saws, drill presses, pedestal and hand-held grinders and sanders, welding equipment (MIG, TIG, and gas), sheet-metal forming and joining equipment (brakes, shears, riveting tools), precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, torque wrenches), skilled interpretation of mechanical drawings, manuals, wiring and schematic diagrams, flowcharts and troubleshooting trees, as well as computers and software to research and document equipment overhaul, repair, maintenance, and calibration.

Required Education:

Equivalent to two years of journey level or skilled experience in the maintenance, repair and operation of scientific or technical equipment in the assigned specialty area, such as mechanical, electromechanical, electronics, including construction and fabrication requiring trade or craft skills working with a variety of materials.
OR
Equivalent to three years of semi-skilled experience maintaining and repairing scientific or technical equipment or related experience in the type of equipment to which assigned as part of instructional support activities.
OR
Equivalent to two years of trade school or technical arts training with specialization in the type of equipment repair to which assigned, completion of an apprenticeship program, post-secondary level technical training, or completion of a full military specialization in the required type of equipment maintenance and one year of semi-skilled experience maintaining and repairing scientific or technical equipment or related experience in the type of equipment to which assigned as part of instructional support activities.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Incumbent will need to be able to perform the essential job functions (duties) of this position with or without reasonable accommodation. Incumbent must possess the manual dexterity and visual acuity to perform mechanical tasks using both specialized mechanical and computer equipment, testing and repair tools. Must be able to move equipment and tools. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is furnished, but students, faculty, and staff are individually responsible for donning required PPE (safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, etc.) when dictated by the work in progress. The Mechanical Technician will assist instructional staff in ensuring that students use PPE as required. It is expected that the Mechanical Technician will typically spend 75% of the work time standing or kneeling to perform equipment repair and maintenance functions, and to assist students and instructional staff. 25% of the work time typically will be spent sitting at a desk researching equipment documentation or interfacing with faculty, staff, and vendors. Corrected vision, including ability to judge distances and spatial relationships and bring objects into sharp focus is required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The lab is environmentally controlled, but it contains mills, lathes, shears, drill presses, grinders, sanders, presses, welders, and compressed-air devices as well as small metal foundry equipment. These devices can produce brief high noise levels, airborne metal particles and dust, intense UV light from welders, and hot metal objects from foundry operations. This position involves proximity to, and frequent interaction with, students in a lab environment. It is expected that the individual in this position will present a model of safety, proper practices, and lab hygiene at all times.
