Position Summary:
Interviews and advises students regarding information, procedures and academic requirements of a specific program or major. Assists students in exploring careers, evaluating academic abilities, and setting goals.

Job Duties:

- Assess students stage of development and promote student growth by assisting student in establishing academic and career goals.

- Advises students on academic and career issues: identifies the educational and career options appropriate for each student and assists with the analysis of each option. Sets up an action plan for student to explore alternative careers and related majors.

- Identifies options for student to satisfy degree requirements; evaluates and makes recommendations on amendments/changes to students program of study; assists student in completion.

- Monitors academic progress of students; determines eligibility and satisfactory progress towards degree; identifies current and potential needs or problem areas; refers student to appropriate campus resources for assistance.

- Maintains student files and records.

- Interprets and explains College policies and procedures.

- Assists in recruitment of potential students by advising them of academic requirements; describes courses.

- Assists students with admission and registration; provides guidance in course selection in keeping with students interests and abilities.

- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.



Minimum Education/Training/Experience:
Bachelors Degree and one (1) year of experience in academic advising, counseling, or higher education; or a Masters degree in Education, Counseling, Behavioral Science, Sociology or related field in lieu of direct experience in Higher Education.

Minimum Knowledge and Skills:
Knowledge of:
- Texas core requirements;
- Career assessment programs;
- Business software programs;
- Course content and objectives.

Skill in:
- Use of computers and related software application programs;
- Interviewing and advising;
- Interpreting college catalogs, course requirements and program parameters;
- Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
