BASIC FUNCTION:
The Pastry Arts Instructor is responsible for lecture and/or laboratory instruction and curriculum development in Riverside Culinary Academy courses. The assignment may also include other courses in the discipline. The primary assignment will be in the afternoon/evening/night hours.

EDUCATION:
A minimum of an Associate's degree (AA or AS), preferably in Pastry Arts or Culinary Arts, from an accredited institution is required. ACF (American Culinary Federation) Certified Executive Pastry Chef and Certified Culinary Educator OR Certified Hospitality Educator level certification are preferred. (All degrees and units used to satisfy minimum qualifications must be from accredited institutions.)

EXPERIENCE:
- A minimum of six (6) years of full-time industry experience as a pastry chef is required.
- Three years of teaching experience in pastry arts is required.
- Community college or baccalaureate level teaching experience is desired.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- High skill level in Baking and advanced Pastry Arts, table service, food costing, and sanitary practices.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to break complex concepts down to an appropriate level for students.
- Ability to identify learning outcomes and execute plans to achieve those objectives with students.
- Strong teamwork, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to stay abreast of industry trends and breakthroughs, and incorporate into curriculum.
- Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office applications, including e-mail software, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint and any other technology systems related to education.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
- Must have current ServSafe Certificate.
- ACF (American Culinary Federation) Certified Executive Pastry Chef and Certified Culinary Educator OR Certified Hospitality Educator level are preferred. If not in possession of these certifications, successful candidate will be expected to obtain such certifications within two (2) years of employment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must be able to lift fifty (50) pounds on a frequent basis. Must be able to stand for extended periods of time in a typical kitchen environment. Must have the ability to work various shifts.

WORK HOURS:
The primary hours of this position will be from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Monday through Friday; however, some assignments may be outside of this primary timeframe.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will, among other things:
1. Fulfill the duties of a full-time instructor, including, but not limited to, holding weekly office hours and completing 24 hours of "flex credit" through various available activities and seminars.
2. The instructional assignment will include lecture and/or laboratory classes in the discipline.
3. Develop, prepare, review and revise course guides, syllabi, and appropriate curriculum materials for the certificate in pastry arts program along with relevant educational materials.
4. The assignment includes responsibility for functioning as a member of the Applied Technology team; networking with private industry and other agencies to develop partnerships and apprenticeships; marketing the Culinary Arts Program to feeder high schools and the community; and providing career guidance and support for culinary and pastry students seeking to enter this occupational area.
5. Assignments are based upon the assumption of workload of forty hours weekly, including but not limited to conducting classes, class preparation, student evaluation, office hours, committee work, curriculum and program development, student learning outcomes assessment, program review, student activities, and other duties per the bargaining unit agreement.
6. Institutional service activities are expected of all faculty members.
7. Participation in discipline/department decision making processes and work regarding curriculum, program development, Improvement of Instruction, and other professional matters are also expected of all department faculty.
8. Responsibilities also include maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
1. Twelve-month, tenure-track position, with a yearly load of 3 FTE.
2. Salary is commensurate with academic preparation, and full-time teaching or equivalent experience with a range from Column C, Step 1 to Column H, Step 6 of the current Culinary Faculty Salary Schedule.
3. Medical and dental benefits are provided for the employee and legal dependents.
4. A $50,000 life insurance policy is provided for the employee.
5. Orientation to college is required as is adherence to Improvement of Instruction policy.
6. Maintaining broad knowledge of the academic or occupational area and design pedagogy related to learning outcomes is expected.
7. Responsible for all other conditions of employment required of full-time faculty members such as a willingness to be involved in District and College promotional activities, active participation in college committee work, student activities and other support services, and appropriate professional activities.
