Northeastern Illinois University invites applications for the position of Physical Sciences Advisor

Full-Time, Continuing Position

Under the general supervision of the Director of the Student Center for Science Engagement, the Physical Sciences Advisor will be responsible for providing academic and professional advising and mentoring on a regular basis to incoming and continuing students, with emphasis on those who are majoring, or who intend to major, in the Physical Sciences disciplines. The advisor will work with the Student Center for Science Engagement staff in providing research and training opportunities for STEM students. The advisor will assist with social events organized by the Center.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Physical Sciences Advisor will provide individualized ongoing academic and professional advising and mentoring for STEM majors, including but not limited to assistance with finding internships, graduate school and job applications, resume and personal statement writing. The advisor will monitor students' academic progress, encourage and assist with involvement in campus activities and intervene with specific students if such an intervention will assist the student in his/her academic progress.

The advisor will assist students with creating professional development plans and with building solid professional skills. The advisor will help develop resources (e.g. handouts) and assist in creating, presenting or supporting STEM-related activities (e.g. workshops, annual symposium). The advisor will support the Center in developing and implementing a holistic advising model tailored to NEIU's student population.

Other duties include assisting the Center in identifying research opportunities for students, and supporting summer research students at NEIU. The advisor will support the Center in developing and maintaining strong outreach initiatives that will provide a broad range of opportunities to current NEIU students and assist the Center in doing outreach to and tracking of new STEM majors. The advisor will refer students to faculty advisors, counseling services, or career services as needed and will maintain and develop professional skills, for example in teaching, research, or mentoring. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a graduate degree in the Physical Sciences, or in STEM education, and will have knowledge of innovative and effective strategies for mentoring students with a focus on research, graduate school and career opportunities. The successful candidate will demonstrate evidence of strong organizational, academic advising and communication skills and the ability to work both collaboratively and independently. Evidence of experience working with underrepresented groups, low-income and first generation students in an academic environment must be demonstrated.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fluency in Spanish, experience with social media in a professional setting, and evidence of strong academic advising are pluses.
