California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) seeks an innovative, experienced and engaged leader for the position of Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

 

The Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs is the chief academic officer and is responsible for promoting a rich intellectual life, fostering student success, creating an active learning environment both in the classroom and beyond, and enhancing academic research, scholarship and creative activity and the diversity of the institution. This creative and visionary individual coordinates and sustains collaborative leadership in accomplishing the vision of the University and the California State University System. The Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs reports to the President, is a member of the President's Executive Council and represents the campus in the President's absence. The Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs is charged with promoting a collegial atmosphere and articulating the needs and aspirations of all disciplines to the President and the University community. The role requires this individual to perform increasingly cross-functional and University-wide duties to accomplish the strategic goals of the campus. The Provost plays a key role in articulating the University's message to all constituencies and the advancing of the University's record of regional stewardship.

In 1989, California State University San Marcos was founded as the 20th campus in the California State University system, which now has 23 campuses. CSUSM is a rapidly growing University with a current enrollment of 10, 276 (9,486 undergraduates) and is projected to continue to grow. The student population reflects the rich ethnic and racial diversity of the region. As a result, the U.S. Department of Education has awarded both the Hispanic Serving Institution and Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution designations to CSUSM. The Location

Located in San Marcos, California, a city of 82,700 approximately 35 miles north of downtown San Diego, CSUSM serves northern San Diego County and southern Riverside and Orange Counties, one of the fastest growing regions in Southern California. While convenient to the urban amenities of San Diego and Los Angeles, the campus enjoys a high quality of life enhanced by nearby ocean beaches, mountains and deserts, and a deservedly famous climate.


Minimum Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate or other terminal degree in an appropriate discipline
  • A distinguished record of teaching, scholarship, and service sufficient to warrant appointment at the level of full professor
  • A record of successful leadership and administrative experience at the associate dean level or above
  • Substantial evidence of innovative and effective leadership in academic planning and implementation, program-development, personnel, team-building, and budget management
  • Demonstrated commitment to student success and well-being including proven ability to coordinate the assessment of student learning
  • Evidence of an understanding of a belief in the values associated with diversity and multiculturalism, as well as a demonstrated commitment to providing a high-quality education to students from diverse backgrounds, experiences, interests, and education needs
  • Skilled in fostering excellence in teaching, research, scholarship, creative activity, and public service
  • Experience and success in creating a vision for an academic unit and implementing a strategic plan
  • Experience and interest in enrollment management
  • Evidence of an understanding and commitment to accountability and transparency
  • Experience with and understanding of complex budget management
  • Proven track record of successful interaction with and support of faculty


Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated understanding of and experience in advancement activities
  • Possess a commitment to promoting the academy and the University's strategic priorities to various constituencies
  • Proven commitment to professional accreditations and international program development
  • Proven track record building external partnerships with businesses and community
  • Experience leading an academic unit in a collective bargaining environment
