Description
This is a continuous posting. Candidates will be evaluated as positions become available.
Application is for Part-Time (up to 19 hours per week), 2nd and 3rd shift openings.

Under supervision of the Lieutenant, Public Safety, serves and provides protection and security to the District properties and personnel; provides fire response assistance; observes and reports potential injury or loss to the College, faculty, staff or students. Patrols campus buildings and grounds, and provides needed emergency; ensures rules and laws applicable to the campus are effectively enforced by directing compliance, issuing warning, and reporting violations to the appropriate authorities. Work requires the exercise of judgment and discretion in assuming control of emergency situations and appropriate action in accordance with established policies and procedures. Collaborates with government agencies and campuses and provides assistance. Assignments are completed independently and reviewed through discussion and formal reports.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Patrols and maintains watch over buildings and grounds, checks doors and windows investigates and reports accidents or defective conditions on foot, vehicle or fixed location.
  • Investigates disturbances, fire hazards, suspicious persons, hazardous conditions, trespassers, and other incidents occurring on campuses; assists in the investigation of incidents; provides emergency aid; documents facts and completes reports.
  • Writes accurate and complete incident reports; summarizes and documents results of initial investigations and campus incidents; Submits written and verbal reports to supervisors for review and determination if further action is required.
  • Patrols parking areas, enforces parking regulations, writing citations and warnings; conducts classroom refrigerator and freezer checks each shift for normal operating ranges; monitors campus-wide safety and reports to appropriate departments
  • Prevents theft and vandalism; reports violations to the City, or Municipality Police Department.
  • Patrols student assembly areas; enforces student Code of Conduct; refers violations to the Student Life Department and /or local police department as applicable.
  • Receives and disseminates information by radio, telephone and computer and coordinate communications between officers and other agencies.
  • Promotes safety and crime prevention throughout the district.
  • Operates and monitors computerized Fire and Security Systems; Closed Circuit Television Systems.
  • Conducts emergency drills such as Fire, Lockdown, and Severe Weather Drills.
  • Dispatches personnel to emergency/non-emergency requests.
  • Assists staff, students and visitors in all activities related to security functions including walking escorts for students, employees and personnel carrying valuable property or currency.
  • Provides the removal of locks and locker contents and provides lock cuts for students/non-students lockers, searches.
  • Provide assistance with shift operations by providing information to co-workers on items affecting their activities and assisting co-workers with problems encountered and making decisions in the field and assuming responsibility for those decisions.
  • Operates as lead worker for the shift; trains officers in the field.
  • Performs other related duties as required for the efficient operations of the division.


Qualifications

Requires an Associate Degree or a minimum of 60 credits in criminal justice or related field (Bachelor's Degree preferred); AND a minimum of five (5) years of law enforcement/public safety experience preferably in a metropolitan area; or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to fully demonstrate the following competencies:
  • Knowledge of current crime prevention methods and procedures.
  • Proficiency in the use of standard law enforcement equipment.
  • Training and skill in community policing practices.
  • Must have the ability to interpret and apply techniques, procedures and methods used in the operation of communications equipment.
  • Ability to interpret and apply codes, policies and procedures.
  • Effective application of Incident Command System and National Incident Management System to emergencies.
  • Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform assigned duties.
  • Skilled in mediation and crisis intervention.
  • Must be able to write basic letters, memos, and reports; perform routine clerical duties using the computer and software applications.
  • Ability to supervise, counsel, and evaluate trainees.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional under stressful situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through both oral and written means.
  • Ability to perform basic math computations.
  • Ability to establish, collaborate and maintain effective work relationships with peers, students, teachers, staff, representatives of outside agencies, educational institutions, and the general public.
  • Ability to convey an image of professionalism and dedication in work related activities.
  • Ability to work with culturally diverse student and employee populations.
  • Proficiency in the use of computers and software specific to position, including Microsoft Office Suite spreadsheets and the Internet.
  • Ability to wear a uniform as required.
In addition, the successful candidate is subject to a criminal background check, a driving record check, a physical exam including fitness and agility tests, a psychological evaluation, drug and alcohol screening, an assessment of professional skills and a review of past employment. All of the "Special Requirements" and "Certifications" listed below are also required: SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • No unpardoned adult felony convictions.
  • No convictions for domestic violence.
  • Valid Wisconsin driver's license and proof of insurability.
  • Must satisfy the demands of the position in areas of manual dexterity, physical effort, potentially hazardous conditions, variable work shifts, and proper handling of personal protective equipment. (Details concerning these demands will be presented to those who apply for the position).
CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Adult CPR with First Aid and Automatic External Defibrillation (AED) certification required within 60 days of employment. CPR for the Professional Rescuer with AED specialization preferred.
  • Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board (LESB) certification as a Wisconsin Peace Officer or similar law enforcement certification (must be attainable) highly desirable, but not required at the time of employment.
  • Possesses or is eligible to possess a firearms permit from the State of Wisconsin's Department of Regulations and Licensing. Such licensing is required within 90 days of employment.
