Basic Function:
We are looking to hire an enthusiastic and highly motivated Laboratory Manager/Research Associate to join the young, dynamic and interdisciplinary research environment at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Biology & Biotechnology

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Primary management responsibilities include maintenance of laboratory databases, biological samples, research supplies, and equipment, purchasing and accounting, personnel training, and research project support.

    Our interdisciplinary neuroscience/bioengineering lab studies the neural and genetic basis of behavior using the nematode C. elegans as a model system. Opportunities are available to support research in these areas. Some current projects include development of nematode models of human neuropsychiatric disorders for drug screening, whole-brain imaging of stimulated neural activity, understanding the role of neural variability, and studying neural changes during learning and sleep.

    Optional career-building growth opportunities include student mentoring, community outreach, management of the WPI MicroFabrication Lab (MFL), scientific writing, and/or networking with collaborators at UMass Medical School, the local Worcester and Boston scientific communities, and the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole.

    Position Requirements

  • - A bachelors degree in biology, bioengineering, or related field, with prior laboratory experience.
    - Strong organizational skills.
    - Good social and scientific English communication.
    - Proficiency in basic lab and database management, general worm maintenance, and molecular biology techniques is a plus; otherwise, the desire to learn these skills is essential.

    The successful candidate will be able to:
    - manage multiple, ongoing projects and responsibilities,
    - lead and direct others,
    - work independently and as a part of a successful team.
