Job Description
The Nevada Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of Nevada, Reno is seeking to fill a full-time Research Aid 2 position as a field technician at the Newlands Research and Extension Center in Fallon, NV. This position is contingent upon funding and does not provide layoff rights. This position will be an integral component of the University of Nevada, Reno, the Nevada Agricultural Experiment Station, the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources. The Newlands Research and Extension Center field technician will interface with researchers engaged in diverse scientific topics including agronomy, native plants, animal health and production, wildlife, and environmental science. The technician will conduct field preparations for a variety of research and Extension field demonstration plots. This includes operation of various field equipment, establishment and maintenance of research plots, and collection of field data including vegetation measurements and crop yield. The incumbent will also be involved in irrigation water applications and will be required to interact with the local irrigation water purveyor and the Federal partner who occupies the adjacent property to insure that the permitted irrigation water is used as effectively and efficiently as possible. The individual will be responsible for scheduling irrigation water deliveries and insuring proper application of these waters. The irrigation applications may require the incumbent to apply water during late night and early morning hours depending on the availability of the irrigation water.

The incumbent will be responsible for effective pest management activities such as ongoing weed management, rodent and insect control programs for the property. The incumbent will be expected to have or obtain a Nevada restricted use pesticide applicators license issued by the Nevada Department of Agriculture. The incumbent will be required to operate and maintain normal farming equipment. They will be expected to have the ability to load and haul small farm equipment using flatbed or enclosed trailers.

Required Qualifications
Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of experience in general farm work which included caring for animals and crops and operating farm equipment and tools; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience described above; OR one year of experience performing routine support duties equivalent to a Research Aid I in Nevada State service. Two years of college level course work in agriculture, biological science or a related field may be substituted for one year of experience.

Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, some positions in this series have been identified as affecting public
safety. Persons offered employment in these positions, must submit to pre-employment screening for controlled substances.

This position requires lifting associated with farming duties which include but are not limited to bucking hay, lifting fence posts, chemical weed control, lifting 40' pieces of aluminum piping, working in inclement weather, and working at non-standard times.

Licenses
A valid Nevada driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
A Restricted Use Pesticide License or the ability to obtain licensure within 30 days of the date of hire.

Preferred Qualification
Candidates with a background in irrigated crop production and/or a broad understanding of the scientific method and have the capacity to learn new scientific concepts, procedures, and equipment are encouraged to apply.

Schedule
The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:00am to 3:30pm; this is subject to change based on organizational needs.
