Madison College offers a generous benefit program including health and dental benefits. The employee selected will serve a twelve (12) month introductory period. This position does not offer a relocation package.

This is a full-time, exempt, 40 hours per week, 52 weeks per year position. Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

This position is grant funded through June 30, 2021, continuation of this position is dependent on continued grant funding beyond this date.

ORGANIZATIONAL FUNCTION AND RELATIONSHIPS:
The Senior Student Support Advisor coordinates, develops and delivers comprehensive services that support student retention and high school degree completion, with a specialized focus on the "at-risk" population. This position supports the Gateway to College (GtC) program team who help guide students to develop meaningful educational plans that are compatible with their academic, career and life goals. This position is the lead communicator to school and CBO liaisons: regularly interfaces and collaborates with school district partners on referrals, approvals and records for students. In addition, this position works to design methods and activities to increase student enrollment and retention rates.

This positions reports to the Associate Dean, Early College Programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
The following duties are typically expected of this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

1. Delivers and provides intrusive case management and support to GtC students (GtC students are identified as being at-risk of not completing high school or have dropped out of high school) to promote academic retention and persistence.
2. GtC Early Alerts & Academic Probation -Facilitates, troubleshoots and manages student Early/Academic Alerts & Academic Probation from faculty and staff to successful resolution(assess situation, determine possible solution, etc.) Assesses student personal, work and academic behaviors. Works closely with GtC Foundation & other Madison College Faculty to create strategies and discuss best outcome for students whom are on Early Alert and/o placed on Academic Probation.
3. Intrusive Academic Monitoring & Advising.
  • Collaboratively reviews and interprets student transcripts and placement test scores.
  • Assists students to develop academic goals and plans based on high school completion requirements, dual credit opportunities, and career aspirations.
  • Advises and assists students in understanding academic requirements and in selecting and registering for courses.
  • Supports students to understand and navigate academic and college systems, policies and procedures.
  • Proactively monitors students' progress and works with students to assess and address academic difficulties.

4. Innovative Teaching and Learning: Applies Gateway to College's seven Principles of Teaching and Learning: Integrated, Outcomes-based Curriculum and Instruction; Rigor; Relationships - Collaborative, Inclusive learning Communities; Relevance - Project-based, Active Learning; Constructing Meaning; Personal Growth and Assessment.
5. Facilitate Career curriculum, Career Advising, Exploration and Development:
  • Teach CCR section every semester: Deliver School to Jobs curriculum, design career curriculum and career exploration opportunities.
  • Provides formal and informal career exploration advising activities that foster and create effective learning environments for individuals, groups, cohorts and their support systems.
  • Helps GtC students develop self-awareness, awareness of the the world of work, and encourages active participation in workshops and assessments related to career development
  • Helps students develop resume and ensure student is meeting his/her Academic Career Plan as determined by the school district. This includes helping student use Career Cruising as a tool to assist in career related activities both inside and outside of the classroom
  • Help student with job exploration and/or internship opportunities.

6. Lead Resource Specialist: Provide lead assistance and advising and program coordination on behalf of the Gateway to College Program Director.
7. Technology: Lead RS provides technological assistance to students to provide their utilization of self-service functions/resources such as: enrollment & advising functions; provide assistance to students regarding course/class selection, enrollment/registration, class add and/or drop processing.
8. Provides a skilled and a high level of troubleshooting of student issues including assessing and/or resolving problems of a critical or sensitive nature, which may involve students, staff, faculty, general public, and/or external audiences such as employers, community partners, or other college representatives.
9. Marketing, Outreach, Partnership and Resource Development:
  • Develops and delivers engaging outreach and informational presentations with school district and college personnel, students, families, and community agencies.
  • Regularly interfaces and collaborates with school district partners on referrals, approvals and records for students.
  • Coordinates and participates in the evaluation, assessment and selection of students including reviewing transcripts, files, evaluations, and interviewing students.
  • Consults with college and community support services and organizations to identify available resources and address student needs.
  • Coordinates the work of student tutors and academic lab facilitators.

10. Intentional Collaboration and Continuous Improvement:
  • Participates in regular team reviews and discussions of proven instructional and youth development practices to inform teaching and program design, adapting strategies and practices accordingly.
  • Collaboratively strategizes interventions around student behavior, attendance, attitude, or performance concerns that negatively impact the students' or learning communities' progress.
  • Participates in ongoing professional development activities within the college and within the Gateway to College National Network (including webinars, training, and conferences).

11. Diversity Competency-facilitates a culture of inclusivity and cross-cultural understanding within the GtC learning community and the College. The Lead RS advocates for the global understanding that individual uniqueness and differences in students impacts their academic success, their customs, thoughts, and ways of communicating, values and traditions.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Knowledge of Student Development and Learning College theory and principles; Knowledge of Council for the Advancements of Standards (CAS) in higher education for academic and career advising and National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) core values is essential.

4. Ability to assess student needs and coordinate culturally competent educational and community based services.

7. Ability to develop community outreach and partnership development; knowledge of local social service systems.
8. Skill in teaching & delivering College Success, College & Career Readiness courses and career development workshops for secondary and/or post-secondary students.
9. Ability to travel to school districts and community agencies.
10. Planning and organizational skills to promote and implement events, education workshops, in-services and programs.
11. Cultural competence, communications, collaborative and human relations skills with emphasis on diverse populations having diverse socio-economic, ethnic and racial backgrounds.
12. Skill in the promotion and enhancement of cultural, ethnic, and gender diversity, as well as policies and programs relating to affirmative action and equal opportunity; Skill in counseling underrepresented populations: diverse socio-economic, racial and first generation populations.
13. Knowledge of current research-based interventions with underserved and under-represented students.
14. Knowledge of advising, career and employment technologies such as transfer Information System (TIS), Career Cruising, Career Locker, TechConnect and their applications; working knowledge of college enrollment management and student administration tool (i.e. PeopleSoft).
15. Ability to work both independently and in collaborative, team-oriented environments.
16. Demonstrated skills in communicating effectively; both orally and in writing and the ability to effectively articulate needs of a distinct population.
17. Demonstrated skills in utilizing the electronic Early Alert system and process for identifying students exhibiting academic problems.
18. Demonstrated knowledge of designated School curriculum offerings, program and degree requirements, certifications and other pertinent information to deliver program content based academic advising.
19. Knowledge of campus/district locations, resources and community agencies that can provide academic and non-academic support to promote student success.
20. Demonstrated skill in being flexible and adaptable to a fast-paced office with a commitment to continuous improvement and professional development.
21. Ability to initiate and maintain professional relationships with diverse groups, demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population including low-income, first-generation, students of color, disabled, underrepresented, older and non-traditional, and international students.
22. Demonstrated knowledge in working independently or with limited supervision, and make decisions independently or with minimal direction.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Bachelor's Degree in Counseling, Education, Psychology, Social/Human Services, Student Services or closely related field.
2. Master's degree in related field preferred.
  • Experience used as an equivalent of an educational requirement is in addition to any experience required by the position.

3. Five (5) years (10,000 hours) of progressive work experience in advising and post-secondary/higher education.
4. Career Development Facilitator certification or the ability to attain certification within six months of employment is preferred.
