Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno is seeking a Makerspace Specialist or Senior Makerspace Specialist who has a passion for shaping experimentation, creativity, failure, and triumph within our students. The Specialist works directly with students to facilitate skill-building and exploration of fabrication in all its forms. The Makerspace Specialist will facilitate use and daily operation of the physical space and equipment that includes 3D printers, scanners, PCB milling equipment, laser and vinyl cutters, soldering and textile equipment, lendable technology, and creative software; the training and safety of employees and users; routine maintenance and expansion of equipment and services; and partners with other Makerspace and Libraries personnel to develop engaging and impactful curriculum, workshop opportunities, and outreach activities to foster community building and resource awareness. This position reports to the Head of the DeLaMare Science & Engineering Library.

The individual in this role may be hired at either the Makerspace Specialist or the Senior Makerspace Specialist level based on experience and qualifications. Those hired as a Makerspace Specialist may advance to the senior level upon meeting the minimum qualification, with satisfactory performance, with the approval of the appointing authority, and contingent on funding availability:

Makerspace Specialist

The Specialist should have advanced knowledge of all equipment in the makerspace, including operation, safety, and maintenance procedures; performs advanced work in co-developing makerspace workflows and assisting makerspace users with unique projects. This position assists other Libraries and Makerspace personnel with instruction, workshops, and outreach efforts.

Senior Makerspace Specialist

The Senior Specialist must have expert knowledge of all equipment in the makerspace, including operation, safety, and maintenance procedures to address all user needs ranging from novice to expert in complexity. The Senior Specialist will work directly with faculty and graduate researchers on high stakes research making needs and act as a direct liaison to various departments on campus including EH&S and Facilities. The Senior Makerspace Specialist supervises the makerspace student workforce, including intensive initial training, regular assessment, and continued professional development. The Senior Specialist will also collect usage statistics and guides initiatives regarding resource acquisition, staffing, and space policies. The Specialist partners with other Libraries and Makerspace personnel and works with faculty to develop and lead the makerspace curriculum, skill development workshops, and outreach activities.

Required Qualifications

Makerspace Specialist

Bachelor's Degree and one (1) year of related work experience; OR Master's degree.

Senior Makerspace Specialist

Bachelor's Degree and two (2) years of related work experience; or Master's degree and one (1) year of related work experience.

Related Experience: In machine/wood shop operations; equipment assembly and programming; arts and textile creation; artistic production; rapid prototyping; educational material development and teaching; supervision and safety policy development or any combination of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience leading, developing and delivering workshops, educational demonstrations, orientations, and/or instructional sessions for novice to expert stakeholders.
  • Experience using creative software such as: Illustrator, Adobe suite, Adobe Audition, Logic Pro, 3D modeling/CAD programs, 3D printing software.
  • Experience using common makerspace technologies, rapid prototyping tools, modeling, build and maker tools and techniques and equipment such as: 3D printers and scanners, laser and vinyl cutters, soldering equipment, CNC and routing machines; sewing or other textile equipment, etc.
  • Experience with hand tools, manufacturing methods and material selection
  • Experience working with individuals who are highly diverse regarding many facets of identity, including but not limited to gender, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, ability, income, level of educational attainment, and religion.


Schedule and/or Travel Requirements

The typical schedule is M-F 8am-5pm.

Occasional evening and weekends work may be required to meet instructional and programming needs.

Occasional university sponsored travel may be required, mostly local.

Compensation Grade

Minimum annual salary for this position is: $50,000. Salary is based on related education and experience, internal equity and budgets.
