Position Summary:
The Academic Retention Specialist will provide direct service to first-year and undergraduate students using the Native American Student Center (NASC) that require extensive academic support. General responsibilities include: Meeting on a monthly basis to monitor academic progress; assessing and providing academic tutoring opportunities for students; overseeing daily study tables; guiding and mentoring students in exploration of their choice of majors and coursework; advising/mentoring students on personal, financial, social, cultural, and academic related matters; researching scholarship and internship opportunities; and collaborating with a wide variety of university resources and personnel to provide students with comprehensive and culturally appropriate services. The NASC Academic Retention Specialist is expected to work closely with the staff in the University Advising Services, Student Support Services, Counseling and Testing Center, and other departments to provide the support services needed for the retention and completion of the students' undergraduate degree. This position facilitates workshops and/or support groups, orientation activities and completes other duties as assigned by the Native American Student Center Director.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelors' Degree
Demonstrated experience:
  • Working with underserved and/or under-represented populations
  • One year working with students in a mentoring and/or advising role
  • Using a personal computer for word processing, email, calendar management and internet searches
  • Maintaining a high level of confidentiality





Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated experience of cultural responsive program development and implementation
  • Demonstrated experience working with Native American populations
  • Ability to: Interface professionally with departments, staff, faculty and students Manage a variety of projects simultaneously
  • One year of experience organizing, coordinating and/or managing academic retention programs.
  • Familiar with UI policies and procedures
