Pathologists' Assistant-Forensic Center (2 Openings)

Hiring Salary: $5,515.71 - $7,527.24/Monthly

JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Pathologists' Assistant assists in the performance of postmortem examinations and associated work duties under the general supervision of the staff Pathologist including examination and description of bodies and human remains, performing autopsy prosecution, dissection of autopsy organs and specimens, and assisting the staff Pathologist in the completion of casework.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Performs complete autopsy examinations including external examination, evisceration, organ dissection, and submission of sections for histology.
  2. Prepares and completes autopsy reports for review and signature by a forensic pathologist.
  3. Collects toxicology specimens during autopsy and prepares for shipment.
  4. Collects evidence from bodies during examination.
  5. Photographs external and internal aspects of bodies and organs during autopsies.
  6. Performs radiographic examinations.
  7. Processes and prepares bodies for examination.
  8. Enters case and evidence information into the database.
  9. Assists Forensic Anthropologist with processing and examination of remains.
  10. Assists with autopsy operations and maintenance as directed by staff pathologists, anthropologist, and in conjunction with the Autopsy Technician Supervisor.
  11. Provides training to rotating medical students, residents, Pathologist Assistant students, and Autopsy Technicians.
  12. Reports to the scene of investigation when requested and assists investigators in the management of the investigation.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited Pathologists' Assistant program or in a medical or scientific field. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified; OR Master's Degree accepted in lieu of experience. Pathologist Assistant certification from the American Association of Pathologists' Assistants or the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) within one (1) year of hire.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS: Pathologist Assistant certification from the American Association of Pathologists' Assistants or the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) within one (1) year of hire. Must pass a criminal background check, drug screen, and possess a valid Driver's License.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS, WORK ENVIRONMENT, & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is regularly required to do the following:
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time, lift, carry, push, pull, bend, sit, climb, and stoop.
  • Ability to lift and/or maneuver bodies and equipment.
  • Ability to properly handle and dispose of hazardous materials.
  • Ability to wear provided personal protective equipment due to exposure to biohazardous and/or chemically hazardous materials.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of National Association of Medical Examiners autopsy standards.
  • Knowledge, skill, and ability to perform autopsies.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy.
  • Knowledge of how the medical examiner office functions.
  • Knowledge of forensic pathologists needs.
  • Proficient computer skills to include Microsoft 365.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with internal staff as well as community partners.

WORK SCHEDULE: This position may occasionally be required to work weekends and evenings.
