Assistant Dean for Student Affairs

School of Information Sciences (iSchool)

The School of Information Sciences (iSchool) at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, is seeking an Assistant Dean for Student Affairs to lead our student affairs team. We are looking for an energetic and collaborative individual who is passionate about connecting the iSchool's diverse and growing student population to student services.

Job Summary

The Assistant Dean for Student Affairs provides strategic direction and supports student academic advising, career services, and enrichment of the student experience within the School of Information Sciences (iSchool). This position will supervise a team responsible for academic advising and other student-facing services for our undergraduate, graduate, and non-degree seeking students.

Duties & Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership of Student Advising (45%)

  • Lead and manage a team responsible for academic advising, student support, career services, experiential learning, practical training, and student programming.
  • Develop, oversee, and continually assess iSchool advising, student services and initiatives, registration, and related policies and practices to produce consistent, high-quality, ethical, efficient, and effective services for students and their timely academic progress.
  • Oversee and support students in various programs (both degree seeking and non-degree students), roles (e.g., as ambassadors, in honors programs or student groups, etc.), and initiatives (e.g., global education) in coordination with the relevant campus units as needed.
  • Oversee and counsel students experiencing personal challenges or other concerns, referring to other university entities as needed. Advise faculty and staff on managing these student situations.
  • Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and staff to support the iSchool's academic mission.
  • Manage academic review and petition processes, including academic integrity reporting (FAIR), and probation and dismissal policies. Advise faculty and team members on these issues, processes, and policies.
  • Collaborate and manage the Student Affairs team's collaboration with Records staff, ensuring compliance with best practice.
  • Gather data where needed to identify student trends and provide ongoing feedback to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, program directors, course scheduler, and faculty regarding student curricular demands and needs.
  • Prepare student enrollment, outcome, and placement reports in consultation with the senior data and policy analyst to meet various internal and external needs such as for accreditation or in response to association requests.

Student Programming and Services (30%)

  • Manage student financial aid, scholarships, and awards.
  • Collaborate with Alumni and Advancement staff on events that connect students with alumni, employers, and donors. Some events will occur outside of regular business hours.
  • Manage the Convocation events and process. Coordinate, execute, and participate in other periodic student-facing programming (such as orientations).
  • Serve as a policy resource within the iSchool by staying apprised of campus policies that impact iSchool students. Ensure University policies and policy changes are communicated to students and other applicable stakeholders.

Management (25%)

  • Supervise staff, ensuring they have any campus-required mandatory training; e.g., FERPA compliance.
  • Collaborate and manage the team's collaboration with the Recruitment and Admissions team to support the iSchool's Recruitment and Admissions goals and activities.
  • Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs on the budget allocations for Student Affairs. Monitor and ensure appropriate use of Student Affairs funding.
  • Proactively engage iSchool leadership and other administrative units within the iSchool to best address student needs with resources available.
  • Serve as assigned on committees relevant to Student Affairs.
  • Review and approve access requests to the Undergraduate and Graduate Records portal.
  • Perform other duties related to students to advance the iSchool mission.

Additional Physical Demands

Work is performed in a typical office environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a field relevant to the position.
  • Supervisory experience (ideally in higher education).
  • Exemplary interpersonal skills and outstanding oral and written communication skills.
  • At least 5 years' experience with progressively increasing responsibility in student affairs, admissions, advising, student records compliance, financial aid, international students, career services, or some combination thereof.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of experience working with diverse domestic and international student populations in higher education.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Outstanding problem-solving skills and the ability to recognize and effectively consult with faculty, advising staff, and others to handle non-routine student issues.
  • Evidence of a commitment to diversity and cultural competence.
  • Evidence of openness to innovative approaches to achieve goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks, work strategically and collaboratively with multiple stakeholders, and attend to detail.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. Salary is commensurate with experience. Work authorization sponsorship is not available for this position.
