Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities


  • Assesses students' needs and learning styles; determines and schedules appropriate tutoring methods for students.
  • Helps students succeed in their coursework while pursuing their careers. Develops personal employment skills, job references, and tutoring credentials within a professional, academic, and business environment.
  • Receives formal training in the principles and skills of adult education. With training and experience, tutors can earn certifications through MATC and the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA).
  • Tutors small groups, or walk-in situations as assigned.
  • Monitors educational materials.
  • Attends training workshops and applies learned skills.
  • Greets students and offers assistance when applicable.
  • Represents Tutoring Services in the college community.
  • Performs other related duties within the scope of the position as required for the efficient operation of the division and to support institutional objectives.


Qualifications

Required Education & Experience Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 overall and a minimum grade of B in the relevant course or area and One (1) year of experience tutoring.

Competencies include cultivating innovation, optimizing work processes, ensuring accountability, collaborating, interpersonal savvy, effective communication, instilling trust, customer focus, action orientation, valuing differences, self-development, and compassion.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities include organizational skills with minimal supervision, teamwork, working with diverse socio-economic backgrounds, effective relationships with students and staff, supporting student-teacher relationships, effective communication (oral and written), using Microsoft Office Suite and the internet, availability during center hours and tutee availability, working up to 19 hours per week, calling in early to cancel sessions, using the TutorTrac system.

Physical demands include the ability to lift up to 25 lbs., carry and push up to 20 lbs., and pull up to 50 lbs. Must be able to climb stairs and a ladder, maintain balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, hear, and speak. The position requires sitting 50% of the time, standing 25% of the time, and walking 25% of the time.


Supplemental Information

Hours This is a part-time position (FTE 0.475) up to 19 hours per week. Hours may vary based on needs and are Monday through friday
