About the Department
Geography is the study of place, space, and the interconnected systems that shape life on Earth. Our department is committed to examining the physical and human forces that influence landscapes, cultures, movement, and the environment. Diversity, inclusion, equity, and access are central to this work and guide how we teach, learn, and serve our students and community. Geographers investigate how power, resources, borders, and environmental change affect human experiences and create opportunities across regions. We explore how historical and contemporary processes such as colonial expansion, environmental exploitation, and global trade contribute to climate challenges, cultural displacement, and uneven development. Geographic literacy helps students make sense of a complex world and empowers them to ask critical questions about who benefits, who is burdened, and how places can be made more sustainable and just. Our department seeks educators who understand that maps tell stories, that spatial data reflects choices, and that geographic inquiry can inspire civic engagement and equitable outcomes.
