Position Announcement

This role offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of data management and analytics at Utah Valley University. As a Data Engineer, you will lead the modernization of UVU's Data Platform, working across on-premises, cloud, and API-based systems to securely move and manage governed data throughout the institution. Your work will be foundational to meeting the university's growing demands by handling the volume, variety, and velocity of data from multiple sources and delivering actionable insights to support decision-making across campus. This position combines technical expertise with strategic design, giving you the chance to implement scalable, next-generation solutions in advanced analytics that truly make an impact.

Summary of Responsibilities


  • Development and Design: Design, build, implement, and maintain data processing pipelines for the movement of data between various source systems/processes and the UVU Data Lake. Ensure the data integrations are accurate, consistent, and timely. Develop robust and scalable solutions that transform data into a useful format for analysis, enhance data flow, and enable end users to consume and analyze data faster and easier. Design API connections, write complex SQL queries to support integration and analytics needs. Lead in the development, design, and maintenance of data marts, data cubes, queries, and data warehouses. Design and build scalable data integration ELT/ETL pipelines using SQL, Python, Synapse, Oracle Data Integrator, Fivetran, Informatica, Pentaho Data Integrator, or other similar tools. Experience blending relational, non-relational, and API data.
  • Design/Engineer/Advise: Own API Management space at UVU. Define and document standards and scalable processes enabling broader API development and democratization of API development within Dx. Collaborate with engineers, data scientists, data analysts, product teams, and other stakeholders to translate business requirements to technical specifications and coded data pipelines. Evaluate and recommend tools and technologies for data infrastructure and processing.
  • Troubleshooting/Management: Monitor ETL processes, systems, and databases, and ensure optimal performance. Ensure consistent, accurate delivery of data as well as troubleshooting any data anomalies in a timely manner. Create and implement effective metrics and monitoring processes.
  • Define Dx Data Engineering Standards. Coach, train, and guide other team members to apply these standards
  • Professional Development: Contribute to a robust culture of professionalism and personal development. In this position, it is expected that you will spend time keeping up with current trends in the BI space and help UVU prepare to adjust and lead in those trends.

Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, plus four years of experience related to the summary of duties; OR a combination of education and relevant work experience totaling eight years.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Knowledge

  • ETL Best practices in a blended on-prem/cloud hybrid environment
  • Experience with a language used to build APIs, including Java, .NET Core, Node, or Python.
  • Knowledge of data processing flowcharting techniques.
  • Knowledge of Microservices Architecture and API Strategy development.
  • Knowledge of data privacy practices and laws.
  • Knowledge of PaaS infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of data processing frameworks and databases (e.g., Oracle, TSQL, SQL, Azure SQL Database,
    Azure Synapse).
  • Experience with a team-oriented, collaborative environment with limited supervision.
  • Knowledge of deploying APIs using API Management solutions (e.g., Azure API Management, MuleSoft)
