Job Description

The Disability Resource Professional and Learning Specialist supports the learning and academic needs of students at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) with particular attention to ensuring a welcoming and inclusive environment for students with disabilities. In the Disability Resource Professional (DRP) component of this role, this position will support the diverse academic, personal/developmental, and interpersonal needs of our population of MD Program learners with disabilities. They will provide learning strategies, coaching, assistance, and referrals as needed for our students such that they are able to perform equitably to their peers. They will be an important campus representative in support of inclusive educational practices and curricular design for students with learning disabilities, working closely with the UNR Disability Resource Center (DRC) and UNR Med Office of Curricular Affairs in engaging a cohesive, consistent and equitable approach to learner accommodation practices throughout the pre-clerkship and clerkship phases of the MD curriculum. In collaboration with the DRC, the DRP offers subject-area expertise to support faculty, administration and students in understanding disabilities and promoting inclusive learning practices.

As a Learning Specialist, this person meets with medical students to discuss individual learning strategies; provides learning strategy suggestions directly to students individually, in small groups, and within learning settings; and recommends outside screening, testing or other indicated support services. This position is part of the UNR Med Student Affairs team, supervised by the Director of Student Affairs and works closely with medical students, the UNR Disability Resource Center, UNR Counseling Services, the UNR Med Office of Curricular Affairs as well as block and clerkship course directors and other teaching faculty.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in student advocacy and navigation, collecting and utilizing data to drive decision-making, experience developing professional collaborations, record of collaborative relationship building and teamwork, and commitment to promoting an inclusive environment for students from all backgrounds and experiences. The ability to communicate complex ideas clearly in both one-on-one and group settings and ensuring understanding are key to success in the role. Characteristics of the ideal candidate include adaptability and innovation in programmatic development, commitment to accessibility and support for students with disabilities, and a communication style that is both insightful and persuasive.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and two years if related work experience OR

Master's Degree and one year of related work experience

Related Experience: Academic or student support services, teaching, or instructional coach; disability services in secondary or post-secondary educational settings

Certification and Licensure:

Ability to obtain and maintain a Nevada Driver's License
